Now I know this is too much money, but its for a friend and he wants to blow some cash and make a fun computer. I know I can get a tits computer for 1200, but see what you can throw together for this.. i dunno, solid state HD for the OS a good idea? Anyway, lemme know, and thanks in advance for the help! Have fun with this one! lol

If you're getting a single SSD, get the Intel X25-M instead of the Falcon:
$230 - Intex X25-M 80GB SSD MLC

If you live near a Microcenter, the i7 920 is still $200 in-store.

I agree, wait if you can, especially on the Vidcard.

Thanks for quick replies guys. So maybe waiting a couple weeks to see what plays out sounds smart..

As far as ssd.. would raid-0 ssd drives be the fastest option ( as compared to raid velociraptors or something) ? Also, budget goal is 2000 or a little more... more is more sort of thing.

Are the new gpus going to be shoddy first round dx11 technology or will they be worthwhile? any word on that?

thanks for the help.

Our current guess by the die size... it should be 35% than current 4800 series.

Overclock the i7 a little bit if you can. Something like 3.2ghz should be easily doable.

i've also read that the 640gig western digital black is faster than the 1tb. is that true?

and of the new processors intel has announced for release early september, are any going to replace the i7 920 in a build like this?

Thanks again

I don't think they're replacing the 920. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, SSDs in RAID0 are faster than any mechanical solutions available right now. VRaptors are a waste of money. http://www.alphaq.org/enginurd/hdd/ocz_vertex.html

The 1TB Blacks are just as fast as the 640GB blacks -- no distinguishable performance difference in the real world.

It's a little unclear as to whether or not Intel is replacing the 920. At first, it seemed that the Lynnfield i7-870 would replace the i7-920, and that entry into LGA1366 land would require the purchase of a $500+ processor. However, the latest rumors (from another roadmap leak from last week) state that the i7-920 will remain in production through H1 2010.

evergreen die is about same as 48xx, which is a 55nm. evergreen is 40nm, so if it is about same size as 48xx. transistors count should be 60% more and savings heat equal to higher clocks.

If you can wait, for this money you should try to SLI GT300s or whatever AMD will come out with. Raid0 3x X25-Ms and probably even watercool. That should end up being around 2k.

 Doubt it. Lets see...

3x X25-M @ $230 each = $700
Good WC'ing setup = $300
2x SLI GT300s @ probably $500 each = $1000
=========
$2000... we havent even got a CPU/Mobo/RAM/etc, lol.

So, you downgrade the WC'ing, that'll save you $100, the GT300's will be $300 (each in your dreams), so that free's up $400, and you switch to 2 SSDs instead of 3, freeing up another $230. That'll give you $730 :D... still not enough for an i7/x58/6gb ddr3/850W/case big enough for WC'ing/storage HDD. :p :(
