I'm going to college this upcoming fall, and I'm building an "ultimate computer" too last me the 4 years of college. I've decided to go headphones instead of speaker system due to being in the dorms, and I can see some people getting pissed at me for blaring music at all hours of the night. I am willing to blow about 200 or less on these headphones.

I was looking at the Sennheiser 595s at first, but I keep hearing about this thing about Audigy 2's not giving enough juice to them, so they are not preferred. Any suggestions on what to do? I would prefer not to buy an amp.

I'm also wondering sense I'll be using these mostly for gaming and mp3 listening, if I bought a HD 580, would it be good for gaming? I hear that it produces a very dark sound, and is not reccommended for rock music. With all the explosions and other things that are in games, would it be a bad decision to buy those?

I did not particularly like the 580's for gaming, I borrowed them from a friend and they promptly went back to him because they had the dark laid back sound you were talking about. And i listen to mainly rock music so they didn't work with my music tastes at all. I would recommend the Audio Technica A500s (what i have, they cost about 120 shipped) if you can spare the extra cash defeintely go with the A900's (about 215 shipped, both from audiocubes.com) They are great for gaming and great for rock music, and can easliy be driven from an Audigy2.

ive heard good things about the A900s. goto headfi and headwize for more info.

LOL! I think Nogs was banned because he might have had a previous username that was also banned - and so he tried to re-register under that username while his other account was still banned.

Back on topic:

The HD580 isn't the best choice for hard-hitting music or gaming. But I wouldn't recommend any closed headphones in that price range either, personally - most of them sound worse than even the worst open-air headphones at that same price point.

Just curious why you think that the HD580's aren't a good choice for gaming or hardhitting music.

I've got pair of HD570's and HD650's, and my brother has HD580's, and I think that all three are just great for Industrial and black metal, along with the full complement of games.

I'm not saying that the HD580's are a particularly poor choice for gaming or hardhitting music. I'm merely saying that there are more appropriate headphones than the HD580's for such use. You see, the sound presentation of the HD580's is a bit too polite for those kinds of use.

580s really do benefit tremendously from decent amplification. If you havn't heard them run from a good headamp, then you really havn't heard everything that they can do.
