First off, let me say that I don't game much more than 30 minutes every other day, and the only game I do play is CS:Source. I'm looking for mostly an internet/homework/simple music recording computer.

I have everything else for this computer to make it functional. These are just the parts I need.

PC CHIPS M811LU Socket A (Socket 462) VIA KT266A ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

REFURBISHED: CHAINTECH Geforce 6200 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM

AMD Duron 1.8 Applebred 266MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model DHD1800DLV1C - OEM

CENTON 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model 512MBPC3200 - (adding to the one I already have)

Dynatron BH-610 60mm Ball Cooling Fan - Retail

I know I can do a lot better for just a little more money, but knowing me, this computer will be sold and replaced within the next 6 months... so I'm not looking for anything "future-proof". ;)

Is there something that I could throw 200 bucks at that would be better?

Thanks. :)

Sempron instead of Duron would probably help, and I think they're still under $50. I presume the 60mm fan is for the CPU as well, so I'd just get a retail CPU and forget about any extra cooling.

Also, can you get anything newer than the KT266(A) chipset? A refurbed nForce2 SPP or nF2-400 (doesn't even have to be Ultra) would be a whole lot better, or a cheap KT600/KT880 solution would be much more worthwhile.

As a completely DIFFERENT alternative, have you considered socket939 with an RS480 IGP motherboard? It won't keep up with a 6200, but it'll leave you plenty of room to upgrade. Also, Source is a) CPU limited, in which case even a cheap A64 will blow past any s462 configuration, and b) designed to run on any video as far back as a GF4MX. Turn down the details and maybe DX settings, and even the integrated X300SE will do just fine.

Recording right?

Screw the new VPU and CPU and get yourself a good soundcard. M-Audio 2496 or an EMU 2020. Also monitor speakers.

I don't understand how people has $200.00 to "upgrade their system" with many, many components. Especially those who intend to game - you have a piece of shit pc now, and purchasing piece of shit components will give you piece of shit performance, rather than saving up for a month or two to purchase better components and in turn get acceptable performance.

Granted, but still- maybe saving up won't accomplish anything. In college, saving up doesn't really work; if you don't have it today, you probably won't until someone gives you more money for the holidays. Remember that on average, college students who don't work on the side make less than $1K per year.

ive run cs:s on 512mb of memory on my 2.4ghz celery.. it ran fine (albeit load times were slower). invest that money into a proc/vc.

i would also agree on gambling with refurbished products.

I'm not upgrading... I'm simply building another computer.

I have a s939/ PCI-e rig too.

Thanks for your input though...

What? Why go from 939 to such an old setup?

Simply my opinion, but I think building a new comp costs more than upgrading an existing comp ;)

Yeah... but see, this will be my computer that I'm always taking places.

I have a video card coming for my s939 soon.

;)
