20 to 24 pin question

OK so I got a new rig, and I had an Rhycom ATX P4 550W psu.

When I was putting it together I noticed the new 24 pin set up. SOO I had to go out and get a 24 pin connector for my A8N-SLI Deluxe so the 20 pin would work. The power source is ATX 2.03 and ATX 12V 1.1 complient. So I'm thinking that it should work fine.

I"m about to re-sleeve the PSU and I was thinking, wouldn't there be a way to just double up some wires from the 20 pin and follow the same way the 24 pin was put together and just use a new 24 pin connector on the PSU when I re-sleeve it?

Should I have gotten a new 24 pin PSU? I"m looking into some of the "X-Connectors" but I can't seem to find one with a 24 pin set up?

Thanks for your help guys :D

p.s. if you can recommed any PSU's with the X-connector type deal for me that would be great too :D

Way old spec PSU. (Watch out Ice Czar is going to drop a big old graph on ya) Short answer........Get a new PSU. Post your exact configuration, run the calculator in the sticky. Also tell us what yuou want out of your PSU. Balls to the walls performance, modular cables, quiet, efficent, etc. And your price point.

oh and btw, I'm going to be running SLI very soon, Should I have a certian type of PSU for that?

Yes. Catch the things in my post above and then we can work.

Ok so far:
A8N SLI Deluxe
3500+ Venice
CMX512-3200C2PRO (soon to be upgraded to 1GHZ XMS pro)
ATI X700PRO Vid card
200GB Maxtor SATA drive

All packed into a koolance case so its water cooled. I"m planning on adding another custom pump system for the video cards and for the chipset once the adapters come out for the SLI cards.

I am also going to put a fan controller in one of the front bays for the second set of water cooling. I haven't done anything like this before, other than set up my stock koolance system, so I’m not sure what I need, but I'm anxious to get started.

As for the type of power source, I’d like to keep those "x-connectors" in mind. I like how I can only plug in the stuff that I need to and its already sleeved. I don’t really know how much power I really need for this mobo, I thought that 550 would be able to hold it over, but I'm not sure with the SLI now. Price is not that much of an issue, I don’t want to spend over $200 on a PSU, but if its necessary, I guess I will.

Thanks for your help :D

Well before running any numbers I think i am going to have to burst your bubble but there aren't any modular (x-connect) PSU's that are going to handle that.......and you are going to be staring your budget hard in the eye or above. That is a lot of stuff to power. You my friend have entered into the realm of actually really needing a PC Power and Cooling PSU. I will run the numbers though to find out for sure.

I thought that might be the case.... I dont plan on doing the second set of water for a while, so if thats a factor, we can get rid of that problem right now.

As for the quick connections, I"m not too picky, but if it would operate better without them I'm all ears. I want function with this PSU.

I upgrade every year with a new mobo and chip, so I dont want to go out and but a new PSU everytime I upgrade, but now I hear that they are moving to a 6 plug ATX instead of a 4 pin, will I have to upgrade my PSU then when that comes out too? If that is the case, I would rather have something that would work good for the system that I have now, then upgrade to a bad ass mamba jama when I get the new mobo and second cooling system.

Well you might as well go ahead and get the PSU now and be forward thinking about it. I am unfortunately not familiar with the water cooling unit you are looking at so I had to guess on a few places when running the numbers. Basically it worked out to get a 510 Turbo Cool SLI or better. They will make any mod's you want at PC Power and Cooling.

great thanks, I checked it out and it seems to be a little higher in price than I wanted to go but whats a $100, for something that would last.

Thanks again :D

HOW ABOUT THIS ONE

Will that work for me too?

Doubtful. While the SLI approval is really a formality the ability to produce needed (and the rated) power figures for your setup in it's final configuration at a realistic operating temperature is the most important thing. The thermaltake won't even come close to the power production of the PC Power and Cooling at a real operating temp. The only other real suggestion ihave for shaving a few bucks is the Enermax Noisetaker EG701AX-VE SFMA 2.0.

You play on the bleeding edge you pay on the bleeding edge.
