20 inch widescreen in Dorm room

I'm going to college this upcoming fall and recently bought a new desktop, but still haven't gotten a moniter. I was looking into getting a 20 inch widescreen moniter, either a 2007WFP or VX2025. I'm leaning towards the VX2025 right now, but would there be any reason to go with the Dell instead, if the main use is gaming and school work? Would this size moniter be too large for a dorm room or should i go with something smaller.

My 19" was fine. Usually you get a lot of desk space horizontally but to get much vertically you might have to pull the LCD forward because they put shelves on the deck that would only be high enough for like a 15" to fit under.

I say the 20 inch will be just as much of a hassle as a 19 or 18 inch.

As Shakezilla mentioned, it depends on the desk they use and whether you can rearrange the shelves to be higher. Widescreen is easier to accomodate than a 4:3 in that case. Go for it ;)

Yeah thats what i thought, should i got for the VX2025 or the 2007WFP though? School work on the moniters seems like it wouldn't really make a difference between the two, so the question becomes which is better for gaming. The only problem I foresee with the VX2025, which as I previously stated is currently my first choice, is that I have a Nvidia 7900 GT, and I've seen that there have been some problems with the card and the monitor. Also, the VX is cheaper.

yeah the shelves are there, but sometimes you can just take them off and put them someplace else like the foot of your bed

Well... I strongly prefer S-IPS panels to VA ones, so I'd go with the Dell. If you are not bothered by the color shift, and you don't need the extra video inputs (very few ppl actually use them) then get the Viewsonic and save yourself some $$. I assume you can take a look at it in any large electronics store. In the worst case, just look at any recent Samsung and you'll see the lack of color uniformity I'm talking about. Some ppl are not bothered by it at all, BTW.

I had 26" lcd tv on my desk and my 2005fpw on a ergotron arm also attached to my desk. Put my pc on a bookshelf i brought and put my keyboard in the desk drawer. That left just enough room to do hw on. Youll be fine with a 20" lcd. The ergotron monitor arm is a great invesment though, especially if desk space is a concern of yours. The LX series can handle the wieght.

edit: our desks didnt automatically have hutches. I personally didnt use one either.

I just got home from orientation. There is a good chance that I will have to room in a normal double sized room as a triple, so three people in one room. I was wondering how i could hook up an xbox to the moniter instead of a tv in order to save some space, and probably get a better quality picture. Ahriman, wat do you mean by the color shift and what would my use be for the extra video inputs? (would they be to hookup an xbox or cable?)

A 20 inch widescreen (16:10) is actually shorter vertically wise than a 19" (5:4)

Just make sure you lock that sucker down to something.

If you don't mind me asking which college are you going to?

I'm bringing a 2405FPW to my dorm next year...as others have said I doubt you'll run into problems with just a 20" WS.

What I mean by color shift:

both popular panel types today (MVA/PVA and S-IPS) corrupt colors as the viewing angle increases. The VA panels (Viewsonic has an MVA) display very bright, vivid colors when you look straight at the screen. When the viewing angle changes just a bit, the colors get washed out slightly. It's not terrible, but it can be annoying to some people. It is very easy to see on [h]ardforum--both the grey and the maroon look different at the edges of the screen as compared to the center of the screen. As for S-IPS (20" dell WS, LG, philips, 20" NEC WS) , at large viewing angles black turns into purple. This angle has to be pretty large, though--e.g. I'm looking at my 2005fpw from about 2 feet away, and the black is uniform, so it's safe to say that you'll never see black turning purple under normal working conditions. I imagine it could be a problem with multi-monitor setups, though. I prefer the S-IPS, but as I said, many people think that the color washout problem is overrated.

NB: Last summer I bought a dell 2405 (PVA) and returned it. Now I'm using a 2005fpw (S-IPS). So I actually saw both panel types, I'm not pulling stuff out of my ass. :)

Regarding the additional inputs, viewsonic has none, dell has composite video (yellow RCA in) and S-video. You can connect consoles to them. As was said before, Xbox has a VGA converter (which provides better quality than any video input). If you get it, Viewsonic will be fine too (it has VGA input). I assume you don't have a receiver and home theater type speakers, so get a simple audio switcher from radioshack--otherwise re-plugging your speakers every time you switch from Xbox to your comp will be a pain.

Oh, another consideration is price. Viewsonic could be bought for about $280 + S&H from tigerdirect (that's after $50 mail-in rebate). Dell will be considerably more expensive, but you get a S-IPS panel, more inputs and a built-in USB hub. If you are getting the VGA box for your xbox, you may be better off with Viewsonic.

So I would need to buy a audio switcher and a VGA cable for the xbox? how much should those things cost?

damn you have a nice setup, how many people are in the dorm with you? I would assume your not a freshman.

there are 4 of us, that bedroom in the pic is all mine though. we all have bed rooms similar to that. i am a going to be a junior this fall, but i lived in the same room last year as a sophomore. freshmen get 2 bed rooms and a living room + bathroom/shower to share with 4 people. so as freshmen we still got suites but we had to share a bedroom.

now that we are uperclassmen we have the kitchen with a full fridge, stove and oven and its great :)

I've had my 2005FPW in a dorm room for the last year, and i absolutly love it. One of the benefits that no one has mentioned, is that you can (for example) have a web page open and a word document open at the same time, side-by-side, and not have to scroll at all in either of them to see the whole page. While this might not sound like that big a deal, once you get used to it, and standard 4:3 monitor just won't cut it anymore (to me at least) As far as size goes, it's not that bad, it'll fit just about anywhere no problem.

Thats what dual moniters are for :D

Dual 17" for 2560x1024 of goodness! That barely fit on my desk in my dorm, but we had crappy dorms and I'm in an apartment now

For a while I actually had 4 17" monitors in my dormroom. So yeah, dual monitor is sweet. However due to the space, I wouldn't go back to those ever again! While you may not have as much space as dual monitors, the space saving of a single widescreen is worth it.

yeah, i've pretty much decided on getting the VX2025. My final concerns is about hooking up an original Xbox (not 360), what cables would i need to buy and how does it perform on the VX2025? And the coating on the screen is anti-glare, so that makes it clearer in high light situations? That will be fairly important since I will have little control over the light sources in the room.
