Today got a new motherboard and cpu for xmas and I go to put it together and I notice that it requires a 24 pin connector and my power supply only has a 20 pin connector. Will it work with just a 20 pin connector.

The asus a8n-sli has an "ez-plug" molex connector on the mb to allow use with a 20pin power supply (the molex supplies what otherwise the +4 pins would). Maybe your mb does something similar?

In this photo it sure looks like it does:

but you'd better read your manual to be sure!

I'd still suggest ordering the new power supply, but maybe you can have some fun with the old one in the meanwhile.

I heard those 4 pins were toward powering the PCI Express slot, and since your 7800GT should draw a decent amount of power, if you want the full power of it, you might wana get a new PSU that is 24 pin.

Thanks for the help guys. Last night I powered it up and installed windows kinda. After it formated the hard drive and restarted it failed to boot from the hard drive to finish installing. My guess is not enought power. So Today I ordered This power supply.

Sorry about the hi-jack but, would there be any danger if you're mobo only has a 20 pin connection w/ a pci-e slot? Planning on getting a 7800gt, but don't want it to crap out cause it's not getting enough juice.

get another powersupply. I'm running a 20 pin off a 24 pin mobo and it's running fine, but i've only got an X800. You can try it, but I'd recommend you get another power supply to be good and sure.
