20.1" Widescreen Decision

I don't know whether to get this monitor, or the NEC NEC 20WGX2 glossy panel. How good is the Samsung, have you had anything to compare it to? Is it bright and vibrant enough for games?
nec has beautiful image quality. colors are super vibrant. the glossy screen is amazing.

Well, as you can probably tell from the last line of my sig, I'm a CRT snob and have gone well out of my way to and to substantial expense to get ahold of the great CRT ever made. . . the Sony FW900.

Having said that, I'm nearly an LCD convert. I just picked up the Acer AL2051W. The Xbrite coating really does give this thing great black levels and makes colors pop. I was sold on this monitor when I visited my local Staples for other reasons, and they happened to have this monitor next to the Samsung 205. I had been considering the similar Samsung 206. . . but I was just blown away by how much better the demo slideshow looked on the Acer. It was a night and day difference.

The Xbrite coating really does seem to be more than a gimmic to me now. I don't notice any drawbacks to it as photos and colors are still just as "true" while I do have great, inky blacks. The fact that the Acer is a true 8-bit panel is just icing on the cake.

I know I probably sound like an Acer marketer at this point, but I'm really that impressed. And this is coming from a CRT guy!

Hurin, is this the Acer monitor you have, then? It seems very similar to the NEC 20WGX2, but over £100 cheaper; i wonder if i'd notice the difference between the 2...

That's it! :D

Now that the initial "wow" has worn off. . . this monitor isn't pefect. But as far as LCDs go, I couldn't really be happier.

Blacks aren't as nice as a CRT. . . but it's leaps and bounds better than the old Viewsonic VP191 this screen replaced. I don't detect any backlight bleeding while at the desktop. But when the entire screen is black, there's a tiny bit in one corner.

But, again, for $250 at newegg. . . I couldn't be happier with this monitor. It's so much deeper and richer than every other monitor I saw displayed next to it (including Samsung). True 8-bit panel. Etc.

But now I'm repeating myself.

What monitors have you seen displayed next to it?
It is running beside about six (or so) other monitors at my local Staples. It looked better than all of them. But the only one I took notice of was the Samsung 205BW since I was considering the Samsung 206.

The only other monitor I've been able to directly compare it to would be the Viewsonic VP191.

But, I can't imagine any other monitor without an anti-glare, glassy coating coming close to the depth and black levels of this monitor. I'm sold on these coatings now.

Edit: I should point out that I haven't spent a lot of time on this monitor. It's for my wife's computer so that she can join me in LotR Online without me feeling like her experience is sucking because of crappy black levels and terrible colors. I play on my Sony FW900 CRT. So, were I to play for a night or two on the Acer, I might find more issues. But as it stands, I just set it up, said "wow" at the improvement, and then went back to my own machine. My wife even noticed the tremendous improvement (especially while viewing her vast photo collection). And she's not very picky.

I have the Samsung 206bw.. its' a nice monitor and I recommend anybody who wants a good 20' widescreen one.

I got my X20WC Gamer today. Beautiful monitor. Went from a 17" 9 year old CRT to this. Its breathtaking. No bad pixels at all. Bright and colorful. And I love the glossy coating.

I'm trying to decide between the Samsung 226BW and this monitor (or the NEC 20WGX2). How bad did the 205BW looks next to the Acer?

It's hard to quantify. So all I can say is that after seeing the Acer next to the 205BW, I certainly did not want the 205BW. The difference was very noticable.

If the NEC has a glossy coating similar to the Acer though, and has an 8-bit panel, it'll probably be even better.

What is this NEC 20WGX2 that you guys are talking about? I can't find any info on it except for one review. It's not for sale anywhere that I see, not even Newegg. Is it not avail in the States? The review made it sound worth checking out. Any ideas on where or how many $$?

Yeah, the NEC uses an AS-IPS panel, i believe. What does the Acer use?

The NEC 20WGX2 is the European version. Look for the NEC 20WMGX2: it has a TV tuner, remote and speakers (unlike the European version) and it's pretty pricey.

According to two earlier poster (page 1), it's a P-MVA panel on the Acer. But, I wouldn't even know how to go about independently confirming.
