2 x Radeon 9800 PRO better than R420?

While ATI is unhurriedly preparing to release its R420 GPU, some companies, not satisfied with a lull in the 3D graphics market, conduct their own experiments to achieve unprecedented performance on existing solutions. On this background today Sapphire introduced its Atlantis RADEON 9800 PRO MAXX 256MB on 2 x R350 (Radeon 9800 PRO) GPUs.

Such unusually configured board has nevertheless the same clock rates, as the single-chip version, 380/680MHz. But the performance...

P.S. For those of you serious people, this card is real! We luckily "caught" it in transit to Germany via Moscow in our airport. Actually it's a non-working sample designating one company's cancelled development. Stay tuned on April 1!

But what stops this from realistically being done?

Games should be written to take advantage of multiple gpus. Someone should make an open src game that does it, and then the industry will have to follow.

Since when does "the industry" pay attention to ANYTHING open source?!
 
Why would anyone go to the trouble of coding a game for multiple GPU's when:
1. There are no multiple GPU cards on the market
and
2. There are no standards in place to do so?

There are cards in the market, the XGI Duo, it sucks but it's still out
 
If the 9800 core was capable of doing "SMP", we'd have seen something like this before now; remember how 3dfx used to pimp SLI, even on their top-end cards? The same goes for XGI, their cards are designed around working together in multi-chip configurations (and need it to get any kind of real performance).

If the card is real, I'd say that each GPU independantly runs a single video-output, providing some killer dual-head action (and finally making use of all that bandwidth on the 8x AGP bus. If this is the case, it could trivially be expanded into a 4-head, dual-GPU multi-monitor 3d monster.

The 9800 is almost like (and in other ways absolutely nothing like) a dual chip 9600, but all in one package.

Sort of like the 9500 core is the exact same as the 9700 but with half the chip disabled.

There is very little reason to have a dual or quad chip board when its easier to just add it all in one chip package. IE: instead of a 8x1 arrangement, do a 8x2 arrangement and *smoosh* the data together.

Only in extremely high end realtime visualizations do you need multichip solutions, in which case it does work but you should have multiple CPU's to got along with it.
 
That card was showed @ computex September 2003. To get that card to work sapphire would need driver support from ati, and with the small market that expensive card would have, well it wouldent be worth to waste resources on.

If the search function would work here, im sure it would turn up some threads about that card.
