Not sure if this is the best place for the question, but I'm having some difficulty tracking down a solid answer.

Is it possible to run 2 video cards (both pci express and both identical), but not to have them crossfired or sli'd? My situation is that I have a crossfire board and will soon have 2 nvidia cards. I'd like to have them both folding and am not sure I have the interest in using the sli hack.

On a side note, if this is possible, how will gaming work...I assume it will just use one card??

Thanks.

I can't say for sure for a non-sli board but there is the option to disable sli on sli boards and have the cards run independently.

I am folding on 2 470's that aren't linked in SLI. If I were to start gaming on them it would use the card in slot one for everything unless I either tell it to run physx on the other card or link them in SLI.

you can disable sli in the control panel without having to restart. i know this because the cuda rendering program i use requires sli to be disabled to work on both my cards.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll give it a go on the crossfire board and follow up in a few days. Hopefully it works because I really don't want to have to get a different motherboard.

Yeah, it should be no problem. Even if the two cards were not identical (even different manufacturers - ATI and Nvidia), it shouldn't be a problem.

But I have 2x GTX 285s that I have to constantly enable/disable SLI for so I can fold (disabled) and game (enabled) on them. It only take a few secs to enable/disable in the nvidia control panel. But you shouldn't even have to worry about that since you won't have that option. Don't worry about connecting the SLI bridge either.

you will not have an issue. I did this for a while with a GTX 260 and a 9800GTX.

Alright, I got my second card in and it is working great! Setting up the folding client for two different cards was the trickiest part. So thanks for the help. I'm actually tempted to try the SLI hack now just to see how they perform linked together in gaming.

yeah its possible.. if you really want to see how possible it is check out atlas folder on youtube.. he runs 4 gtx 295's on 790FX motherboards :p

by the way if you want further help regarding folding feel free to ask in the distributed computing forum section at the bottom of the main forum.. tons of help down there thats specific to folding..

the hack doesnt work on every board and the performance is hit or miss since while the hack works it also kills some of the performance at the same time..
