I was at home for lunch today and so of course I check up to see how progress is going. I open up the log on my P4 mobile lappy that DOESN'T have HT and see that it has 2 instances of the console running and 2 instances of the tinker core splitting CPU time!!! Now I think it had been doing it some this weekend too cause it was taking the same amount of time to process P755 steps as my 1.4 athlon without SSE! So I was suspicious before and this has to be the cause. Anyone know why or how this boxen started up 2 instances of the console and was working 2 cores at once? I rebooted it and it started up just one core, but i don't know how the 2nd got started and was killing my lappy with the constant context switches as two idle taskes kept fighting for the cpu! Thoughts?

Have you switched from graphical to console recently?

Track down both instances to their root directories and look at the cfg files as well..

Yeah I fixed the problem by taking it out of service mode now. Just running the console regular style, tinker frame time are cut in half cause i had that ghost process running. Maybe it was cause I have it set to pause during battery, and maybe it started a new process when i reconnected the juice. I really have no idea.

So maybe you were drinking and installed twice? Just kidding, but that is weird. ;)

I can’t see how it’s possible but perhaps the battery “appeared’ to the program to get low and when it came back up actually restarted another instance. Far fetched, but who knows.

Strange behavior there, so both cores were working out of the same directory as well? On the same unit even?

I dunno if anyone else has had this problem though, glad to see it cleared itself up.

Yeah see thats the thing, I don't think the second core was doing any real work! When I restarted my lappy and only one core started I got some weird message in the log about another console already running in the dir. So I rebooted again and took it out of service mode, then ran it normal style and it picked up where it left off on the tinker, but the time for each frame was almost cut in half! I'll have to look at the log again tonight and maybe post some of what I'm talking about when I get back from work. I wanted to post some of it last night but the forums were flakey all day yesterday. I wish I woulda taken a screenshot of the task manager and copied off the old config file too to try to figure it out. Oh well, we're back folding at full speed again!

UPDATE!

Piece of shit! It asks if I want to uninstall the service, I say yes all is great after the reboot. I come back to the lappy which I shut down this morning to take to work and its folding a service client and the client I started up after I plugged it back in here. So we're back to 15 minutes a frame again! I shut down the normal console, service keeps running but not updating the log. So I restart, client starts service mode and low and behind the frame headers don't match! Restarting from initial frame!!! I about threw it against the wall! It completed 150 frames at 15 mins a frame instead of 7 and now it starts over! This lappy is gonna be the end of me.

^^^That was my laptop with the standby problem. There was never a problem with two clients running--just one client and being in standby for >3 hours.

No I've been doing full shutdowns and start ups. The only thing I've done different than the other boxen im running is that i put yes to pause when running on battery. Other setup is exactly the same.
