2 raptors, 2 different models?

basically, i had got 1 raptor. then i decided im goin to raid them. i had got 1 raptor from a local vendor, then the egg had a sale, and i picked up another from then, then got the pacific digital talon controller. and setup my stripe. easily enough, been done before.

now either its me or my speeds seem slower when compared to 2 80gig seagate sata hdd's in my shuttle.

i dont have benches now, but using hddtach. my sustained read is faster, but my burst seems a bit on the slow side.

these are my 2 raptors, and they show up as diff firmware rev's. could this be an issue?

raptor 1 frmware rev .21.08u21 wdc-wd740gd-00fla0

raptor 2 firmware rev. .27.08d27 wdc-wd740gd-00fla1


anybody wanna tell me in just crazy and its not going to matter? or is there a way to flash the FW on my hdd's...?

Zeroth, note that raid-0 is not a good way to keep data you like. Google around (or search the forums) for information. It's not much faster and much less reliable.

The lower burst speed is (at a guess) because the shuttle has onboard raid. PCI cards are slower than directly connected to the motherboard (depending on implementation, but...) so the shuttle gets higher burst speeds.

But all the benchmarks can do is make sure your name is revered by geeks everywhere. If it feels faster, go with it.
 
The drive firmware shouldn't affect performace
However, what I believe you are experiencing is what many people on this board have been saying for a long time: Single Raptor 74s outperform dual raptors in RAID-0
 
well im using the pacific digital talon controller, its supposed to be made to go with the raptors, and such n such. but yea, no data is important so much so. all my critical data is backedup on my servers, all mirrored, so im not stressin it, this is just my gaming rig, and doin somwe reading raid-0 isnt so great for us gamers as something about file size not bein large enough to see the benefits. ah hell tho. when i upgrade later on to 64bit ill get a board with onboard sata raid (damn near all of em come with it now) and then i can compare performance with onboard controller vs my talon baddie :) thanx yall

Not all 74GB raptor hard drive implement TCQ. Any model number that ends with WD740GD-xxxxA0 may not support TCQ correctly. These hard drives were our initial release product that should not have reached the Retail or channel market (as these were beta testing units). Inevitably, some of these drives reached channel inventory and ended up in end users hands.

funnily enough i have one of the A0 versions of the drive. im searchin WD's site for any info, on how i could possible send it back to em and get one that supports TCQ correctly. anybody else heard of this??
