Hello All,

I keep coming back like a coldsore lol.

Just a few questions, but first here is my system specs:

Intel Core i7 950(3.06GHz) 64 bit Quad-Core Processor
Intel X58 Motherboard
12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 1333
1TB (1 x 1TB) SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 7200RPM HDD
24X DVD±R/±RW Dual Layer Drive
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCI-Express Graphics Card
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
700 Watt PSU

1.)Overclocking: How much can I safely OC my video card without problem? I saw on newegg a few guys saying they were able to go up to 950/1360. I went home and tried those setting, but after awhile of BF BC2 I got white screens. I ran the test and it said those settings would work.

My PC has an option to run the system at high performance and Turbo setting (plus a few lower settings.) Do those actually do something worth while or should I try to OC?

2.) 3DMark: I downloaded it and ran the test. I received below average scores of 16,000s. Is there a program that I can run to turn off any unnesssary background programs? I'm thinking my system should score better.

I'm new back to PC gaming and I enjoy reading the posts here
 
to test OC run 3dmark vantage for 2 hours in a loop (most intensive non-cpu tests) and then run Kombustor for 2 hours and if both pass without crashing you should be ok, but not definitely because some games will stress the card differently than those two programs.
 
To help with Question #1: Every video card (and this goes for other hardware, ie CPUs) is different. Not all cards of the same model will reach the same speeds when overclocking; you could get one that overclocks extremely well at stock voltage, and another one that will barely go over stock without crashing. So just setting someone else's settings may or may not work on your card. Its just the way it is, unfortunately. That said, I'd check what your gpu fan is running at, if its staying at a low speed I'd up it and see if that helps, because if the crashes happen after awhile its possible that its just overheating. I'd run GPU-z in the background to find out.

Edit: That's a fairly high OC on that card, so those other guys probably just got a better sample than you, or they might be overvolting or have different cooling. Try overclocking in steps, up the core 20MHz, test it for stability, then up it again and see how high you can get. The best overclocks are done as a process and take a lot of patience.

Great information thanks.

Do I up the core clock and memory clock by 20 at the same time? Or should I be doing them seperately? I turned the fan on manual in the setting to around 55-60 or should it be higher?

As far as 3dmark testing, how do i know what I turn off and leave on? Is there a download I can get to ensure I'm testing with only what I need on?
 
you can just use task manager to kill anything you need....
 
separately to establish what is stable for each one that way if you have an issue you will know which upclock is causing it.
 
I"m not sure which programs are safe to close in task manager. A few times the screen went blank after I closed a few programs (Had to restart to see it again).

Is there a list somewhere I can find or a program that will do it for me?

So far I've bumped it up to 920/1270 with no problems that I'm aware of. Now at 925/1275.
