2 power supplies

How do you hook 2 power supplies together so they will both power up when you hit the power button?

My CM Stacker came with a little dongle that plugged into both power supplies and then had a main connection to the Mobo. One of the dongle ends was for the unit you wanted to power the mobo stuff and the other end of the dongle was for the second power supply, it only consisted of like 2 wires (ground and turn on signal I assume). I have no idea what to call it though...

***WARNING I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS WORKS***

Ok so I'm totally guessing and know this sounds "hacked" but I think it's the basis for what you're asking for and I think it might work.

Ever had a power supply for "testing" and you connect the Black and Green wires (I don't know the pin-outs) and then when you plug it in and use the PSU's power switch to turn on.

So take PSU #1 and plug it in like normal to devices and motherboard and power. Plug the wire from the case "PowerSW" into the motherboard like normal.

Take PSU #2 plug it into whatever devices you want.

The key here is taking and splicing the wire from "PowerSW" so that it too runs to the PSU #2 in the Black and Green spots so it switches THAT power supply too. Then always have the power switch for both PSU's turned on and one switch (the case switch) will control 2 PSU's.

Anyone back me up on this one?

say if I had 4 HDD's on the primary supply and 3 HDD's on the secondary power supply in RAID 5. would the Remote/Secondary Power Supply Starter Cable work?

If I were you, I would get the switch linked on the bottom of the faq page, and just make sure you have the alternative powersupply switched on before you turn on the psu powering the motherboard. I'm not 100% on that.

I think the more important question is, why do you think you need two psu's? Oftentimes you can just get a better psu.

The case connections will not work. one of the 24 pins on the 24 pin motherboard power cables will need to be linked between the two PSUs

If you already have two 400W PSU's sitting there doing nothing, its cheaper to use both of them then buy, say, an 800W PSU brand new...

True. I don't think the op specified if he had two or just wanted to buy another one. I may have missed it though

I can't read all these posts. :p

I just can't believe you don't know what a fog-light relay is. ;)

They're used for other things in cars, but if you go to an autoparts store, that's how they're sold.

It's essentially a 12V relay. Four prongs. When one pair of prongs is energized with 12V, the other two prongs create a closed circuit.

So what you do is take a +12V lead off of the "main" PSU (the one that's plugged into the motherboard and therefore turns on and off by "normal" means) and hook it and a ground up to two of the prongs on the relay.

On the open/close prongs you hook the green wire from the main ATX connector up and a ground.

I'd give you more detail, but I'm too busy right now... but there's a diagram on the back of the relay package.

because I'm upgrading my system in my sig. with 8x wd 500gb and a sata raid 6 controller card and I don't think I can find a power supply to power all that in one box.

Would I get ground loop problems out of the rocker switch because the people over in Disk storage land forum says that the motherboard regulates the voltage from the mother board and that my hdd's on the secondary power supply would die from ground loop and corrupt my data.

If they're both ATX PSUs, why not just tie their green wires together with something like Scotch Lock connectors (Radio Shack, auto parts stores)?

I've tried that and it didn't work. :( Don't know why.
