2 molex's for a PCI-E?

I just purchased an EVGA 7800GT. It has an adapter for 2 molex's to pci-e connector for the additional power that is needed. Stupid question, but I really need to sacrifice two lines just for the video card? That won't leave me too many for 2-4 HDDs, 2 DVD/CD drives, fans, etc.

Shoulda bought a higher capacity PSU if you were going to have all those drives. Will you have enough connectors for the rest of the stuff that you want to connect? If you do then you are ok. Next time overestimate your PSU needs.

I got a 2-molex to pci-e adapter for my second 6800 ultra (neopower 480 only has one dedicated one), and oddly enough if both are connected the system won't boot but if one is connected the system runs perfectly.

interesting...i wud think that a neopower wud be able to supply enuf power for both...but i guess they are 6800ultras so u cant expect much...just go grab a powerstream or seasonic :p

no it does supply enough power. The system runs perfectly stable and great. The card just doesn't like having both molex's connected or something.

I think you actually only need one. Not 100% sure.
I had my GTX running with just one connected and it went strong for a week and half before the Nvidia panel said it wasn't getting enough power. No clue how it managed to go for a week but it did, hah.

um...i wud think that running fine w/ 1 card and not running fine w/ 2 means that there isnt enough power...but then again i'm no person for SLi

My PCIE connector wasn't quite long enough to reach my 7800 GT, so I used this molex thing and only plugged one in. The card ran fine, but I couldn't get why it would run fine with one molex thing connected, yet it could take two. I forced my PCIE connector to reach to be on the safe side, and I'm all good now.

The answer is No. The card has 1 connector but the connector that goes into 6 pins has 2 different 4 pin molex connectors. You only need to plug 1 4 pin connector to either of the 2. The card will get enough power that way. If you have a newer power supply you can just plug straight in with a pci e 6 pin vga power cable.

What? It runs fine with 2 cards. It just doesn't like having the second molex connector connected to the adapter on the second card. Both cards, in SLI, overclocked, run perfectly stable.

I have an evga 7800gtx and instead of using the double molex connector that came with the card , I used the dedicated pci-e wire that came with the 500w antec modular ps.

I did notice that the connections to the power supply and the card were the same , so I didnt know which side to plug into the card and which to the power supply. I looked at both plugs and one side had all six metal pins and one side had only four or five of the metal pins. I looked at the other connections and some also had missing pins so I plugged that side into the ps and the side with all six pins into the card (plus it was the side that had a sticker that said "pci-e power").

I hope it's okay to use a single dedicated wire instead of the 2 molex. I also hope I plugged it in right. The card has been working for a couple days now.

actually, a neopower 480w has 2 dedicated pci-e power cords, not one. i'm not using one of mine because I don't have a second video card for my PSU.
