Hey everyone, well I'm gonna build my first comp, but I was wondering about my hard drive config. I want to use a raptor 74gb for windows xp and a wd 120 for storage...now the question is, do i hook up both hard drives before i install windows xp on my raptor and juss partition the raptor or do i hook up the second drive after installing windows xp and just format the second drive in windows xp?

Install the big drive first to run FDISK on it to set up file allocation tables...then change jumpers so big slower drive is slave and small faster drive is MASTER...put OS on master drive and format slave within WinXP....good to go.

Doesn't really matter, but if you Fdisk the big drive first (as suggested) then Windows will by default have the drive letters C: for Raptor D: for Big drive and E: for CD-Rom.

If you add the Big drive later, it will be E: unless you change it. (easy to do)

Being SATA the Raptor will have no jumpers, or more accurately if it does they are for the power options :p

attach the Raptor to the onboard port, boot to the CD (BIOS Boot order) you will be prompted to partition and format, and also offered the chance to press F6 to load additional SCSI drivers cant remember which is first :p (watch the bottom of the screen for the F6 prompt), do so it will go along its merry way for awhile and then prompt you for a floppy, install the SATA drivers, complete your setup and reboot

then access the BIOS and set the boot order to SCSI first (unless there is SATA listed)
BIOS vary alot, shutdown

attach the WD120, I assume its IDE?
configure it however you like (depending on what other opticals you have, it can share the channel) see > Partitioning and Optimizing Tutorial > Physical Configuration

then boot up again, if it works great, if it doesnt reboot and access the BIOS your looking for a BIOS option like Bus Manager

an example for a P4C800
its "Enhanced Mode" under the IDE Configuration, and that IDE Bus Master is selected

as I said it varies quite a bit from BIOS to BIOS, so a good read would be all the BIOS options in the manual ;)
something I do as soon as I get a board

Good Luck

Oh and then format the new drive via
Start > Run > (type) diskmgmt.msc > RClick a wizard will likely popup, dont "upgrade" to dynamic disk, if it doesnt Rclick unallocated space and Partition and format

alright Thanks ice! is it ok if i pm you if im having trouble?

Ice loves to answer questions, last time i gave him a 52 page essay and he actually gave it back to me corrected! I'm sure he has nothing else to do in his spare time. I believe he's not really human, i think he's a monkey who sits near the computer and eats banannas and clubs the monitor when he's angery. Can anyone concur? :p :D

Here's the parts I'm planning to get:

1 - 74gb raptor
1 - 120 wd ide hd
1 - cdrw optical drive

Here's my question:

I want to install my os on my raptor, use the 120 hd for storage. I bought two round ide cables. One for my optical and one for the 120 hd. How would install my two hd? Raptor to be master? The 120 hd set to secondary master? The optical drive set to secondary slave? If someone would be so kind to help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Actually Im an overclocked automaton Kyle built from the spare parts of Steve's victims :p

put the raptor and the cdrw on the same cable because if you are going to burning cds from the 120 then it would be ungodly slow if they were on the same cable and set the cdrw to be slave (which in this case would come out to be primary slave)

the Raptor wont have any jumpers for Master or slave it needs to connect to an SATA port
and there is only one drive per port

hook up the Raptor and the Optical drive first and install per the F6 instructions above
(BIOS boot order set to CDROM)
when done set the boot order to SCSI and boot to the SATA
(though actually reading the manual for all the BIOS options is even a better idea)

after you get that working attach the 120
(Ideally each of the 120 and optical would be masters on their own channels)
at which point the BIOS might have problems determining which drive to boot to and again probably buried somewhere in the manual will be the BIOS options that allow you to use both but boot to the SATA as mentioned above

that P4C800 above
just supplying one example of how that BIOS\mobo does it

Id really like to see that :p

MAB Im merging these threads
crossposting is strongly discouraged
I assume this one was elswhere and moved here ;)

well, I'm just gonna stick with the 74gb raptor and not use the 2nd hard drive....So how is this setup:

Raptor 74gb on SATA0
CDRW/DVD Combo drive on primary master

Is that correct?

sure
you can also use the other HDD
in fact you can have 4 PATA devices (with 2 IDE Channels)
and however many SATA devices you have ports for on the mobo

plus cards of course
