Recently, my house was struck by lightning. The next day, my parents' computer will not boot. The computer will turn on, and the monitor receives a signal, but nothing happens after the computer is turned on. The strange thing is my computer was on and running when the lightning struck and nothing is wrong with it. Both computers were plugged into surge protectors and apparently mine worked and my family's didn't? Their computer hasn't worked for maybe a week or so now.

The strange thing is my grandparents house was also struck by lightning and it now has the exact same problem, and it too was plugged into a surge protector.

The only link between the two computers is that my family's is a HP and my grandparents' is a Compaq.

I was wanting to know if there was any kind of tests I could do to see what went wrong with them or anything I might need to reset to get them running again.
 
Electricity is a fickle mistress, temperamental yet beautiful, harsh yet giving.

If you mean 'power strip' instead of 'surge protector' then that's like wearing a paper hat in a car wreck, they aren't going to save you from a direct strike. Be thankful the bolt decided to follow the wires going to their PC instead of yours while it searched for ground.

Swap out the PSUs, maybe they heroically sacrificed themselves before the majority of the surge decided to forcefully overclock the rest of the PC.
 
Yeah, best thing to do is swap in a good PSU and run some benchmarks for awhile to make sure everything is stable.

In my experience if the surge hits the power supply the rest of the machine is usually fine, but if it comes in through the ethernet port or some other direct connection to the motherboard it will kill some hardware.
