Ive got a 2.8c on an ABIT IC7-G max2 advance mobo with 1 gig cosair XMS cas 2.5
My ram is overclocked using the F1 setting in the bios..its 1:1...
ive just got some general questions about overclocking...

1. I have to set the AGP/PCI ratio to fixed when I overclock or my RAID won't be recognised... why?

2. Ive heard the "C" class is easier to overclock..I can get it to 3.08 stable... at 3.2 I experience crashes... temps are fine... why?

3. what does the voltage part play in it... that is the thing i understand the least... I hear many of you talk about upping the voltage for ram, cpu, ect. how do I know what to bump it up to and when?

any answers will be appreciated.. I'm just trying to squeeze every bit of life out of this setup I can because I can't afford to go to pci-e yet.

ok... I actually did this on another forum where im trying to figure out what hardware I need to run FEAR decently... but it shows some of my overclocking issues on it.

Doom 3

System:
P4 2.8C Northwood
ABIT IC7G-MAX2 advance
1 Gig Corsair XMS twinx CAS 2.5 at 1:1 ratio (F1 setting in BIOS)
ATI Radeon 9800PRO (clock-378 mem-337.5) atitool (non OC)

First runs… medium quality… 2xAA … average time using timedemo demo1
640x480 (default) – 54.8fps
800x600 – 52.4fps
1024x768 – 39.6fps
1152x864 – 33.2fps
1280x720 - 26.6fps

High Quality, AA-off

800x600 (default) – 52 fps
1024x768 –42.3fps
1152x864 –35.9fps
1280x720 – 29.7fps

High Quality, 2x AA

800x600 (default) – 46.4fps
1024x768 – 35.6fps
1152x864 –
1280x720 –

for the heck of it… Ultra Quality everything forced max trough ATI control panel

640x480 – 37.4fps
1280x720 – 34.3

I don’t know if it actually forced it or not…those are higher numbers than what I would think
Actually I think it did ultra with no AA

Second batch…
Upped 9800pro to (clock – 387 mem – 372)

High Quality 2xAA

800x600 –
1024x768 (what I want to at least play F.E.A.R at) – 37.6fps … only a 2fps increase?

Upped processor to 3.08 Ghz (had to bring RAM down to street racer setting to get it to boot…still 1:1)

1024x768 - 36.2 fps… … I think I’ll change that back… any ideas how this happened?

Well… that’s my benchmarking… its as close to FEAR as I could get and as you can see my ideal fps is far from 60 where I would like it to be… Any clues as to how close a 6800gs or gt would put me to that mark? Im too worried about ruining my only video card too overclock too much. During all this temps stayed below 60 on my cpu using ABIT’s ABITEQ .

In a mobo like the IC7-G, the AGP/PCI ratio is be default tied to the system FSB clock. If you overclock the FSB, you're basically also OCing the AGP/PCI buses. In general this is not a good idea and can cause behavior like what you see in your RAID. Locking the AGP/PCI ratio is recommended.

2. Ive heard the "C" class is easier to overclock..I can get it to 3.08 stable... at 3.2 I experience crashes... temps are fine... why?

You just use the motherboard's F1 and Racer settings? You don't manually set memory timings and such? I can think of a few possibilities. One is that your RAM can't handle the performance settings the motherboard uses in F1 mode and such. I have an IC7-G and just manually set all my memory and FSB settings when I overclock.

It is also entirely possible you have a bad CPU for overclocking.

3. what does the voltage part play in it... that is the thing i understand the least... I hear many of you talk about upping the voltage for ram, cpu, ect. how do I know what to bump it up to and when?

If you up the voltage of a CPU, you might be able to run the CPU at a higher speed than you could normally. Upping voltage to memory might help the memory stay stable at higher clock speeds - might also have to loosen the timings too. Generally if you're out of other options, upping CPU voltage is the only way to try to get that CPU stable at a higher speed.

Careful though, a high VCore generates more heat and could also just kill the processor if you're not smart about it.

ok.. I used to have 2x256 samsung pc2700.. with those set to auto, I could overclock to 3.2 and be stable for a while... I was at 3.08 for my standard setting. with my newer corsair ram I can't do that probably because I have them set in F1...read my benchmarking about how I got it to run at 3.08...I had to lower it down to the street racer setting. Im worried about messing with the ram on my own because this is high dollar stuff. I did try the 5:4 setting first but lowering the setting really did the trick. I think my vcore is 1.5. would I need to up it to go higher? you said you have the same board... what are your settings? Im confident my ram can take it because it runs at the F1 setting while the other ram could barely go to turbo...step 1 of like 4 with F1 being the highest. not to mention its cosair XMS...i mean come on! $200 ram... since you have the same board could you give me a good overclock setting? im just really worried about my hardware... thanks
