Just put together the system in sig. I've been overclocking in baby steps for the last couple of days and the overclocks have gotten progressively better. I'm prime stable @ 3.22 on default volts, but no higher (I'm priming at 231 FSB now. 230 FSB was my last stable prime.) I'm using the stock cooler with some AS5. The temps have climbed to 60C during prime, but I've heard things about the IS7 misreporting temps, so I took it with a grain of salt. Am I probably just running too hot, need to bump up the voltage (which I'm uneasy about doing on stock cooling with the temps going over 60 anyway), or both?

Edit: About a minute after I finished this post, the system shut itself off. I have the Abit EQ to shut down the system if the CPU reaches 71C, although I can't prove this is what happened. It's hot in the room I'm in, so that certainly isn't helping the heat matter.
 
You running the ram at 5:4 ratio?

Your temps are high, try switching to a better heatsink.
 
The RAM is at 1:1. There shouldn't be a need for me to drop PC4000 back to a 5:4 at only 230 FSB. I agree, the temps are high, and that's probably the limiting factor here. 3.22 is good enough for my needs at the moment. I also thought it could be a PSU problem, but I checked the voltages on all the rails. Everything is within tolerances.
 
i had the same problem....its coz u are running at stock voltages....once i upped my VCore to 1.6250 it flew all the way to 3.5 Ghz....i am sure it will go higher but i dont have the cooling to try.
 
Ok, you didn't put your system's info so running 1:1 ratio should not be your problem. Raise your vcore and ram voltages up and then see if the system is stable with higher fsb.
 
set VDimm to 2.8V and leave it there(these high performance sticks seem to be happiest there....)

and up the vCore accordingly as you increase the FSB....

Should I have to up the vDimm even BELOW its rated speed? That seems really weird. Anyway, I'll probably get some better cooling this summer when I have the time to mess with it.
 
i dont know what it is but it just seems that these high performance chips like higher voltages..i find my corsair XMS is most stable at 2.8V, no more no less...its just something you can try...
 
yeah, what youre going through is about right with normal voltage, check my specs for what im doing with a sl6wt chip.

I would not raise the voltage much past 1.65 TBH, i hear P4's are adverse to higher voltages...

what are you using for cooling?
 
well i think no doubt your temp is way too hot.

my P4 2.4c was getting to 66c when i didnt have my pelt seated correctly and i couldnt even boot into windows. i reseated it and it went to 2c and i was A ok.

id say your temps are EXTREMELY hot and isnt allowing your OC to be pushed.

The stock cooler. I've got a friend who is a hardcore overclocker using an IS7 + watercooling and he has measured the CPU temps by hand and says they are about 10C too high. I did get into Windows a 3.3 on default vCore/vDimm and it plays games and does everything but Prime95. 3.22 is still my best prime speed, so that's where I'm staying at for the moment. I'll probably get an SP-94, a 92MM fan of some sort, and a fan controller over spring break to keep this thing under control. I know my temps seem unusually hot, but I have this LARGE heater about 12 ft from the comp that heats the air right around it to over 200F, so that isn't helping me out :p
 
After further checking, I think I've found the culprit, but I don't know exactly what to do about it. Most people that I've heard talk about the stock cooler say it runs at about 5000 RPM and that it can get loud. After monitoring the fan speed in the abit doctor and BIOS, mine is only going at roughly 2700 rpm MAX while priming. Is there a way I can speed it up? I also have the case 120 MM fan in the Sonata on the fan only connector, which I'll change to the regular connector tonight. Does anyone have any idea on how I can get the stock cooler to spin faster, if it will spin faster? I just checked out the BIOS, and I didn't see any way to get it to go faster.
 
I have a SP-94 with a variable speed enermax 92mm fan... I plugged it into the fan header on my P4P800 and it wouldn't even spin unless I turned it up to full speed and even then it barely spun. I hooked it up to a "fan" molex connector from my Antec True430 and still the same slow speed... I plugged it into a regular 4 pin molex and it spun up to full speed.
 
i have a 2.6 and it's at a vcore of 1.65. I think it's cursed.
It plays well at the fsb in teh sig below but if i set it one nothc higher right now, with my current setup, it becomes unstable.

CPU-Z though has the thing flucxuating(sp?) under load...the fsb hits 240 according to that program....i'm trying to put all my dvds on my server right now....

why's it behaving so weirdly?
