I've been out of the intel game a while. And today my buddy called and said he had a 2.8C "prescott I think" and Ai7 board he wants to trade for my amd setup. well i've been wnating to go back to intel so I was like wth ok bring it over.

Chip is a SL7E3 Phillipines 1MB l2 cache. I'm looking into over clocking it seeing his board has done 300FSB stable before I know it can get up there. My ram has done 290 stable so I know it wont limit me. Any one have experience with this stepping? Any help would be great.

You should really post it in the Intel forum. C is Northwood.

Can't be a 2.8C with 1mb of lvl2 cache.....that's a "Prescott only" trait.....so it'd have to be a 2.8E.

I honestly haven't heard a lot of good things about the SL7's.....but I haven't heard a lot of bad either, so it's kind of a toss-up at this point. While the AI7 is a nice mobo.....you might get unlucky and end up with one of the artifacting AI7's. What happens it seems is that on random AI7 boards, artifacting will occur in almost any 3d app/game as soon as you pass about 235fsb with your memory at 1:1. I have yet to find a sure-fire "cure" for this, and since there's still the chance of running into that quirk of the board, and the chance that the SL7 wont' OC very well, it's up to you.....I dont usually like to do system upgrades/purchases unless I have full confidence in what I'm getting.....which I would NOT have in that P4 setup, not after having a bad AI7. ;)

Board I know is fine, the guy I got it from is my best friend and has been running the board almost a year now. It's run 261 1:1 with his twin mos 3700, I'm not worried about the board, more on the chips side. Did a little more digging it's a D0 stepping Prescott chip I've not been able to locate anything on the web about the chip. Right now it's @ 257 FSB 1.49V 3.6ghz. But the cooling is inadequate to say the least. I prefer air over anything and need to get an sp94 again, I had great results on my last AI7 with this same memory able to run my 2.4 m0 chip @ 3.45 1.725V 46C max load. I know these E's run hotter but I'll take the chance.

im about to throw a 3.2E into my setup and see what happens.....interesting fact about the AI7 i think i may be having the same issue i seem to have probs in 1-1 @ anything over 237 but im mixing my ram ATM 1 stick is BH-6 and one is BH-5
yet they both do 240 in single channel :( will know soon my OCZ 4000 will be here soon and if my MB indeed has this problem ill throw it out the window and buy a IC7

eViL_M@LuM, you might want to check out Intel CPU list here to find what you're looking for. There're a few D0 2.8's in there.....so maybe this'll help narrow it down.

So far i've been able to get 3.5ghz @ stock voltages. My air cooling is insufficient to say the least. I'm gonna get a new sp94, the 120 wont fit my board. But I've been able to benchmark 3.69ghz and boot into windows @ 3.8ghz. we'll see what happens.

Thanks

Maybe I was wrong about that SL7.....seems you've got quite a nice chip. My 2.8C m0 won't even do 3.5GHz at stock voltage......so I say keep goin. :D

I definately need better cooling..... 53C under load , cheap ass pos. If I bump the voltage up to 1.41 it jumps to 60C under load. So she's sittin still till i get a new HSF.

You runnin' the stock Intel cooler? Those temps/increases sound like what I had to live with for a few days when I was running the Intel cooler on my overclocked 2.8C....I had no way to monitor my load temps at the time, but the BIOS holds your CPU at about 50% load.....and with my sig overclock it was already reading 54C or so.

It's a copper cooler that my buddy gave me, a frankensteined Thermaltake cooler. But I'm looking at water of a sp-90 the new silver looking cooler from thermalright.

K, I'm ASSUMING you meant water or a sp-90.....and it's the XP-90. ;)

haha, yeah thats what I mean. It's been a rough todays, I spent three hours last night rewelding some parts at work with a mig welder and I refused to wear a mask "seeing our masks didn't work right" and sun burnt my face to hell. i look like a swollen apple right now.

Haha.....never seen a swollen apple before.....I'll have to take your word for it. :p

Thanks smartass. :p

I'm just saying is all.....it'd be quite the sight. ;)

Kinda reminds me of when I was out at a BBQ all day and didnt actually burn until
later that day when I was laying down, I woke up to the burn too.....and it was bad......use your imagination. ;)

I work 3rd shift, and when I went home yesterday I went to bed around 8, I dont remember anything until about 4:45 that afternoon. My cell had 6 missed calls, and it was about 5ft away from me. I was completely worn out, not to mention the fact that my face feels real stiff, I kinda look like I just had plastic surgery done. all swollen and red and shit.

Yeah man, I hated/hate feeling all stiff and dry like that.....its the worst part IMO.....but yeah.....OMG!!!! we're so ontopic. :D :p

No one else is reading it why do we have to stay on topic :p

True.....well......what else is there to talk about? I think this thread has kinda come to a dead end. :p

at least until i get my new cooler then I'll be able to post more of the impressive numbers :p I've never been one to venture off of air cooling, I'm not trusting enough to do water cooling, and the numbers dont seem any better then what I've achieved on air, and my box isn't very noisy.

You may not have a noise issue.....and you may be able to get your temps quite low on air cooling, but what is mainly the gain from going to water cooling is the fact that the rise from idle to max load temps is almost never any more then 7-10C on a decently built setup.....something that isn't really that achievable on air cooling.....even the nicest HSF combo's out there don't have temperature changes that are that subtle.

Not so true, my last intel setup running 11 case fans and an sp-94 on a 2.4 @ 3.45 1.725V it idled @ 36C loaded at 48C. So a 12C isn't all that much different then water cooling. Also whats wrong with heat treating your CPU "thats what we call it in the motorcycle world, you run the engine 15K rpm in first and let the engine slow it self down then do it again, heat treats the block. :p

Ok so they have nothing in common, but what toys do you have that does 0-60 in 3 seconds and 0-100 in under 7.8seconds ???? :D

The vast majority of ppl with nice air cooling usually have somewhere around a 10-15C rise from idle to load....but a nice water cooling setup can often cut that in half. Again, it aint for everyone....and it takes a bit more then a store-bought Aquarius to get nice results and smaller deltas then high end air cooling....but it is still very doable.

I'm um to 3.6 stable in prime. 14 x 257. 53C load temps. not much different then my 51C load temps before. My PWM is what worries me, the mofsets are getting extremely warm 64C Not sure what I can do about it, short of putting ramsinks on them. Any ideas?

When I made the switch to watercooling I went from 260fsb@3.1 to 270fsb@3.25 with my crappy 2.4c. Also slapping on the water cooler lowered the reported PWM temp by about 10c.

If your sticking with air the only thing I can say is, sure slap some sinks on em.

These are my reported temps right now:

ambient---23-24c
system----30c
PWM-------32c
CPU--------38c
GPU--------12c
