setting up a dell 700 with 2 7900 cards.
Can you run 3 monitors off this with no problems?

I belive, if you dont run SLI, then its possible. I dunno for sure if you use a SLI mobo and not run the cards in SLI mode will it let you use it in triple mon mode.

If you run SLI then no, you can only run 1 screen (2 maybe?)

If you are getting two..I would have them in sli mode and use the above mentioned matrox product. SLI = one monitor only. Two seperate cards in non-sli mode = four monitors. Why get two cards if you may end up enabling and disabling sli all the time, just get the Matrox!

enabling/disabling sli used to require a reboot, but I think that current drivers now let you change it on the fly. Rather than the triple head 2go, it'd be much cheaper just to get a $30 PCI card and run a screen off that.

Forget the Matrox. Waste of $300, in my opinion. Just get a cheap, extra PCI GPU for the two additional monitors.

Edit: IanG beat me to it

from what I read (3 monts ago) the matrox only allowed you to stretch the desktop across the 3 monitors, I did an update search and this has been changed so it can do this. So with one card it can do 3.

There is software out there that allows you to have 3 desktops. (well 3 in the same way that I am using 2 now with ati hydra) ULTRAMON
this is what I was going to use but I assume that the sli 7900's in a dell have 4 outputs

Yes. Disable SLI for desktop applications, for the cards to display up to 4 monitors, the enable SLI (without rebooting) for when you game. No extra items to purchase.

I've thought about using Ultramon, having virtual monitors in linux as a experience to draw upon though, for myself its not really usefull as it is "different". Having a multi monitor setup is more productive in my experience.
