I'm looking to upgrade an old laptop that takes 2.5" IDE hard drives. I'd prefer to never buy another hard drive again as a boot drive, even in something this old.

I know there are only a couple choices available, but what are the better (or best) IDE SSD drives out there?

I bought a 32GB PATA SSD for a first gen macbook air (replacing a 1.8" PATA 4200RPM disk), and it significantly improved the speeds, even with the PATA interface.

I'd say if you're really attached to your existing laptop, you could, but you might just look at saving your money and getting something more modern.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but PATA is not going to show any benefits of the SSD speed due to the bandwidth restrictions placed on the interface.
Sequential transfer speed is not the only or even the main reason for buying a SSD. The user experiance improvements given by a SSD mostly come from the improved random access performance which is largely independent of bus performance.

Yah, due to those prices, I might just pick up a slightly newer laptop off eBay. I really really hate 16:9 AR laptops. So big and so little vertical resolution. I think a nice Thinkpad 410s in 1440x900 (16:10 AR) might be do'able, and some come with SSD's already.

Thanks
