Hey folks,

I'm looking for 6 drives to use in a new NAS setup. The case appears to be restricted to 2.5" with 9.5mm drive slots. Aside from SSD, WD Red 1TB or Samsung M9T what options are available. Looking for decent performance in a small package that doesn't break the bank.

I appreciate any input.
 
How much storage space do you need 2.5" is expensive >1TB even for consumer drives, but step into quality 2.5" and you're really expensive.

For the $ now the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB or 2TB 2.5" is appealing, especially when comparing to etnerprise grade 2.5" 1TB Spinners, even more-so when comparing "rip-off" branded 2.5"s (DELL/HP/LENOVO/ETC)
 
Are you looking for storage volume or raw speed? You could always get 6 2tb seagate usb drives and rip them open for the 5900rpm drives (I think they are 9.5mm). Also what form of raid are you planning on running? If for example you did 1+0 you could get about 5.4TB, where as raid 0 or jbod you would have closer to 10.8 TB. Also you can find these on deals around $69 to $79.

With that being said you are still looking at close to $500 for that. I know you don't want to look at ssd, but the 2tb Samsung evo 850's are $800 a piece right now and are monsters for speed.

I might suggest 2.5" sas drives but most of the larger capacity drives are 15mm, and we do not know if your NAS box supports those and they get pretty pricey.

I fully agree on the evo's but I don't think I can justify buying 6 of them right now. They are over 5 times the price of a 1tb spinner.

It will be interesting when we start seeing these high capacity 3D nand drives from other vendors. My guess is that prices will begin to drop significantly.

I had initially though of doing raidz or raidz2. If I went with mirrors instead the evos wouldn't be an issue. Might be the best way to go for now.
 
The Seagates I believe use M9Ts which are pretty cheap. It might be best to use the evo's for a single high speed zspool followed by a slower zspool based on these larger disks.

I had checked out some of the sas 2.5 drives but out of the ones I saw were nearly as expensive as the evo's! Anything specific from the sas drives you would recommend?
