2.4C no longer clocks as high?

Weird thing happened to me. I have a P4 2.4C, which used to run 3.4 rock solid - I'd even booted into Windows at 3.6. Then, to test another CPU (P4 3.2C), I swapped it out for a few days, then put the 2.4C back in. Now it will only clock to 3.25. WTF? No component other than CPU was changed, and I improved the thermal paste from before.

The only thing I can think is 1) Some mysterious BIOS setting is screwing me, or 2) some air got trapped between the processor and the waterblock.

Anyone ever suffer this phenomenon? It really has me PO'd.

uhhh ok first off all your getting a solid gigaghert out of that chip, which i'm sure you bought for cheap anyways. as long as it runs rock solid now, who cares if it dropped 200 mhz, u won't notice the difference. anything over two i can understand. remember, you were ocing 1.2 ghz above factory, if it drops two and still stays there you should still be happy

Dude go away I wish I could run over 1,000 mhz fsb on my 3.2c I only can hit 920 on air or 3.5c which I dont run it at.

what would u like us to say? overclocking is a sketchy part of computing, its not always gaurenteed and is often unstable. it snot suprise to me that your chip went down in clock after you've been keeping it at a solid 1.4 ghz all along. complain about the being unstable at stock speeds, or your mobo not booting up. don't complain about overclocking. be happy with what u have, i'm striving to jsut get 500 mhz out of my 3.0x, even after buying new arctiv silver and a zalman 7000 hsu.

*edit* if you beleive its a problem with air, or the bios then toruble shoot. reset the bios back to default (should be an option for it) and just tweak your clock settings. if that don't help then try getting that air bubble out of the block (don't know much about water cooling)

Well first of all a 1 ghz jump would be 3.4, like he had before. As for the CPU running at a lower clock, I'd say yeah reset CMOS, if that doesn't make maybe try a flash, but I really don't see how that would do anything. Do you think perhaps you didn't seat it correctly? Or maybe tighten the heatsink a bit more on? I've never owned a water cooled rig so I can't really help beyond that point. Only thing I can possibly think of that is reasonable is that when the 3.2 was put it, it had to change some BIOS settings fit for that chip, and then changing it back to a lower clock maybe the BIOS didn't change the settings it chnged the first time back? But that's really all I can think of, it's gotta be the BIOS though, or the seating of your waterblock.

How clean is your radiator? I have to clean mine every 2 months or I get lockups due to heat.

most thermal compound requires a setup period
other then that take off the cooler and reapply and see if there is a change

are you sure your tubing and everything is clean as well?

as for those idiots who told you to be happy with what you have, don't worry, noobs appear on every forum.

I have to agree with you, I think it's the former, the BIOS settings. The problem is I am using relatively new RAM, so I don't have all the settings ingrained into my head. I guess I will need to clear CMOS again and fiddle with the BIOS ad nauseum.

But this thing was rock-solid at 3.4 with the exact components. I'm looking into a Vapochill, so I want to make sure this thing is tip-top shape.

The raddy is clean - it is mounted outside and I regularly blast it with canned air. Temps are fine.

It is just baffling that you switch a processor out for like 5 days and suddenly you lose almost 200 MHz. It seems inconceivable that the 2.4C processor was somehow damaged by this swap. I mean, processors either work or they don't, right?

And 200MHz is a lot, since these new super video cards are CPU-limited on many games. ;)

Thanks to all who have taken a guess. :D

Like said before...there is a set in time...or maybe it got applied funny somehow. A lot of base needs to run hot then cool down a couple times.
