Exactly how far should you be able to overclock a pentium 4 2.4c before you need to replace the stock cooling. I'm looking for a ballpark figure here as I know it will vary given case temperature and other factors. Reason I'm asking is that I've never overclocked a processor before and I don't want to damage it until I can afford a new computer. At the same time I don't want to go out and actually spend any money on my computer as I will be getting a new one relatively soon.
 
With best aftermarket air cooling, you can reach my speed, or maybe even higher :)

(only reason im at 3.2 ghtz right now is cuz of crappy pc2700 pc4400 in the mail tho :D )
got same overclock on stock.. just dont expect it to run cold...
 
nothing more than 3.4... above that you'll have terrible heat issues when the pc is running on 100% load
 
depends on how fast you wanna kill the chip. I say 3.0 is a safe, conservative OC on the stock OEM cooler.
 
mine's been running between 3.3 and 3.5 since day one on stock cooling..temps aren't great, but they don't get that high.
 
3.2~3.3 was pretty warm with stock cooling IIRC.

Pickup some copper from thermalright and you should be able to get the most out of your chip on air (with decent temps too).

He could just be refering to shortening the lifespan of it.
In which case I'd say that it's moot for most people on this board. They will probably still last longer than their usefulness.
