My retarded brother in law bought a combo from some no-name online vendor and he got a 2.4b (533fsb) and some crappy Via chipset board. When he couldn't get it to boot I came over to help out and concluded that either the mobo or proc was fried. (either by him or it came that way) So...I took the proc home with me and it booted fine in my IS7. My question is this: if I advise him to to get an 865pe board will he still be able to run dual channel? I couldn't test this because one of my sticks of ram is burned out...

Yep, that 2.4B P4 will run on an i865PE-chipset-based motherboard. And the i865PE-based mobo will also run PC2100 DDR memory (if a 533MHz FSB P4 is used) or PC3200 (for an 800MHz FSB P4) in dual channel mode, so long as your brother-in-law gets himself two identical sticks of memory. (This means that if your brother in law has a single 512MB stick of PC2100 DDR memory of 2.5-3-3-6 timings, he must also try to get himself a second stick of PC2100 DDR memory of the same size, with the same timing specs.) With only one stick of DDR memory on that i865PE mobo, the system will default to single-channel mode.

I agree that he'll be able to benefit from the 865 chipset board with the dual channel. The only thing he won't get is hyperthreading.

That's exactly what I forgot to mention. Among the 533MHz FSB P4's, only the 3.06GHz version supports HyperThreading. (All of the 800MHz FSB P4's support HyperThreading.)

Ok thanks guys, that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure since I don't have 2 sticks of ram to test it at the moment.
