2.4 northwood overclock

my cousin has a 2.4 northwood cpu running a 272 mhz fsb with a 12 x multiplyer msi neo 2 motherboard what are your thoughts on this overclock and is this my limit or could i reach more i reach 275 and i lock up i have the stock p4 cooling on it
 
no onje has anything to say is this a good o/c or no do u want me to post pics to prove it or something or does no one care

With stock cooling, I don't think you'd be able to go much higher then that.

It's not a bad OC really especially considering you're using stock cooling. I'm running mine at 273fsb with watercooling and I've run into the same problem, 275 is doable but I don't get 100% stability from it at that FSB so I just don't bother.
 
tried uping the volts? my friends 2.4c is fun to screw around with heheh
 
My 2.4c is stable at 275FSB (3.3) with stock cooling, stock voltage. I have it running at 284FSB (3.4) but I feel that my motherboard is holding me back. When you get into high FSB's like that, alot of motherboards can run stable at high FSB's. I've seen my 2.4c run well over 3.5's on other motherboards but with my system anything above 284FSB won't boot.
 
Even on ASUS mobo and stock voltage and even a stock HSF I was able to gett stable 3,3 GHz out of 2,4 PIV (HT 800 FSB and 512 KB cache Northwood)

I'm running the Vcore at 1.65v and upping it to it's max limit of 1.675 doesn't help stability so there's no real point in throwing the extra voltage at it. My 2.4C is a very early model and I've got no doubts the later ones will likely OC far better but with a close to 40% OC I'm still not going to cry into my beer especially considering when I built this PC the 2.4 sold for $175 (OEM) and the 3.0 was close to $700 for a retail chip.

Personally though I wouldn't attempt a big OC with stock cooling...I cringe when my CPU hits 48*c as it is now and my cooling's pretty good.
 
The same stock heatsink used on the 2.4C was also use on 3.2C. If you can hit 3.2 with default voltage its pretty safe to use stock cooling. If you need to overvolt then you need better cooling.
 
Back in mid 2003 they had an all aluminum square heatsink in the packages with the 2.4c and the 2.6c which is when I purchased my particular CPU and besides that, mine was OEM so I didn't have a sink with it but I did manage to liberate the stock sink from a 3.06b CPU for it and with that particular sink my CPU idled at about 42c with a mild OC of about 440mhz at stock voltage.

Personally I just can't deal with temps that high which is why I watercool, my load temps with my current OC runs about what that idle temp was.
 
My load temps on my system are between 40-45C. Thats with my CPU, GPU, and NB all on the same loop, and im using a Koolance.
 
You say that as if using a Koolance was a bad thing...I ran an Exos on this system for about a year before switching to my prior integrated setup and I loved it, aside from a few quirks that bothered me, it was an awesome cooling solution.

My load temps ran about what yours do but I never really was too comfortable running it in mode 1 so I kept it in mode 2 and on hot days it would spin up and those fans are very annoying at high RPM in a small room which is what I have (you could call my room a very large closet actually) so I decided to sell it and go with a large tube medium flow system and personally I love it.

Would I run an Exos again? Yup with no hesitation but I still don't care for the noise they make when they spool up.
 
I love my Koolance and I think its performing great, but there are many people on here that think that watercooling kits are complete junk and insist on custom built systems. From everything I've read, I think I'm having less eventfull time with my Koolance than others are having with custom built systems. My Koolance has never cause any problems.
