I have been told buy a number of people on a number of forums that a 2.1 setup using separate parts will be a much better listening experience compared to that of a branded 2.1 speaker system.

I am looking to spend no more than $200, and $150 is my sweet spot. I want 2 speakers (satellite), an 8 to 10" sub and an amp (if needed: I am new to the audio world and have no idea if this is essential).

Keep in mind that I will use the setup primarily for Gaming on my 360 (H3, COD4) and for very loud music listening (Bloc Party).

Thank you.

That'll be $200ish. The only real place that you could cut corners are the bookshelves, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could possibly get $15 Presidians from Radioshack which have been reported to be pretty damn good for their price, but the Insignias have been shown to be really damn good for their price.

If you can strech it a biiiiit more you can upgrade to the Dayton 10" sub which has been reported to have better sound quality.

Just recommend T amp 2 so they don't need to buy a PSU for it separately like with the original. Unless they wanna use batteries.
