hi. I currently have no computer speakers (when its near my stereo that works... but that not always:p) and i have a tvtuner card in it. I recently got a 21" monitor; so want to use it for dvds/tv more often. As such, i want speakers.

For 100-150 bucks; what would be my best buy for 2.0 or 2.1 speakers? I know if i were to talk into walmart and buy the 76 dollar 2.1 altec lansing they have ther;e i would probably get laughed at here. I will be using it for music/tv/dvds. Any suggestins?
 
For around 150 you can get a set of klipsch promedia 2.1s best 2.1s you can get IMO.
 
or the altec lanscing mx5021s, which i think has a better midrange, and stronger highs.
 
If you don't already have a receiver and want to keep it under $150 the Klipsch Promedia 2.1s are probably the best way to go. If you have an old receiver lying around and just want 2.0 try a monitor pair, some of these can be found around that pricerange do a search on this forum.
Also, how large is the room you will be using these speakers in?

You can also get the Promedia 2.0s for about $80-90, if you did want to go the 2.0 route.

Sometimes, you can find a pair of swans M-200s for $150-ish as well.
 
the room they will be in changes ever 6 months or so (college student, changing apartments/movign back home/etc), and as such changes from smallish enclosed desk built into wall(at parents house) to big living room (right now) to i dont know where 6 months from now when i move into new apartment(havnt drawn out rooms yet)

As I dont have a set place; and in none of these places cept maybe my bedroom at parents house do i have places to setup a 5.1 properly, im thinking the 2.1. How would the low end bass be on those promedia 2.0s in comparison to logiteks 5.1 surround sound? Coming off an audigy2 so would have all the channels; but i would think 2.1 would sound better in my situation...

I like the look of that altec lansing... mx5021.. but a bit more then i think i can spend...

Anywho, Alright I would switch then back to your orginal 2.1 instead of the 5.1 I suggested. Do'h! Though I dont know any good 2.1's off the top of my head.
 
I don't have experience with the MX5021s or the PM2.0, but with most 2.0 system they lose a lot of low end due to no sub, but still can be nice.

*points to $50 Altec 221 speakers in signature* :p I don't feel ashamed to own these, I actually like them a lot for music, but I also watch DVD's on my computer so I do desperately wish I have some nice 5.1's :(

T-amps provide about 15 Watts per channel don't they? Those fosgates can handle up to 200Watts so they wouldn't be getting enough power, on the other hand the popular M-audio DX4s are decent set of powered monitors that can be had for around $150. The DX4s also have rca inputs.
 
At that budget, I would get a typical computer 2.1 set. Try for one with a decent subwoofer. Something with an 8" driver.

p.s.
Power handling specs on speakers aren't mandatory. A quality 15 watts of amplification should be enough for all but the most ear-splitting volumes for nearfield listening.
 
a few hours from now i'm gonna order the mx5021s i think. 130 shipped from newegg is a real nice deal it lokos like. Would it hurt the soudn quality of my Senn hd212pros if i plugged it to the mic no front? of them?
 
You're asking about a passthrough jack? IME those usually degrade the sound quality noticibly, although if they do it right it doesn't have to. Depending on your tolerances & the quality of the implementation YMMV.
 
hm.. i crappy 2.0 set that came w/ a dell optiplex gx1 for a while; and when i used the passtrhoguh on the speakers added static buzz. I'm not sure if havign a nice set like either the promedia 2.1 or the mx5021 will do the same or i will have to get a switch typ esetup (front audio on my case is ghetto wires, need to rip it out and get better i think)

Googling it up... foudn nothing but glowing reviews of this... would my audigy2 to the mx5021/senn hd212pro benefit from having a t-amp in the middle? (i would assume not, but it looks cheap enough that if it made a difference would be a nice pickup next paycheck..)

no, amps provide volume and thats it. the speakers have a built in amplifier.

The fewer things you have in the chain from source to speaker, the better.
 
yep, there's no point sticking an amplifier in front of a set of powered (i.e. self-amplified) speakers. my point is that the t-amp is sufficiently cheap and good that you can buy it with a decent pair of small, non-powered bookshelf or monitor speakers for less than $150 or $200. common picks are Polk R15 (if you can get 'em on a _good_ special offer, less than $100) or Paradigm Atoms.
