Iv started to make a 1U rackmount system from a laptop with a dead screen and a old cisco/hp 10baset hub i had sitting around. i gutted the laptop and the hub now i am at several road blocks.. first the most basic.. How am i going to power this, i do not have the adapter.. nor do i want it. i think i am going to try and make it run off of a standard power supply. Anybody heard of this being done?.. how? the other problem is mounting the mainboard. i think standard pc motherboard risers would be to tall.. so i am trying to think of a way to mount it.. i was thinking drill and tap a hole. and use a screw with washers(plastic) to get it to the height i want. Any body have a better idea? Also, Has anyone ever seen a atapi.. Cord.. the laptop cdrom is not where i want it. so im going to (try) move it to the front of the case with the rest of the connections. Ideas? Questions?
 
Well... I'm sure you can power it off a regular power supply if the AC adapter cable supplied 12v. It might not have supplied 12v, so you need to do some research first. What laptop was it? Can you find the specifications of the adapter it uses? Lots of laptops use a 13 or a 14v output plug (well, mac ones at least).
 
I know you can get 3.3, 5, 7, and 12. I think there might be a 17volt mod in the casemod faq or in the electronics section... but considering the wiring, I think its unlikely.

So you might just have to get a notebook adapter... generic one would at least not have the fans of a PSU right?
 
If i get a notebook adapter i am going to have to run both a laptop adapter and a standard powersupply for the 3.5 hard drive and the fans. i guess i could get around that but i would rather not have to.
 
I found a way to mount a desktop hard drive on a laptop ide connector. by getting a 2.5 ide gender changer i can flip over a standard laptop ide to 3.5 ide and plug it into the laptop side of the plug and then connect a cable to the adapter and then a standard hard drive to the end of the cable... Does anyone know if 2.5 ide can handle two drives on one channel?
