Looking for a good quiet A64 fan.. needs to be low profile for a 1U unit. No overclocking will be happening with this.. just working on noise factor right now. Suggestions?

1U heatsinks typically are very, very short. This means very, very little surface area. This then leads to higher fan speeds required to remove a higher amount of heat from this diminished surface area. You do the math.

They're typically okay for regular and/or server use, but in a quiet environment, I don't really see them being viable...

Rackmount servers are not meant to be bedside machines. They were designed to run fast and loud in isolated server enviroments. Asking for silence on a 1U server is asking for a ladder to the moon.... good luck.

Actually its for a proprietary unit attached to a large plasma screen, turn it on and forget it... unfortunately they are loud.. we are just looking for ways to quiet them. Didnt think there was
anything as far as CPU fan went, got case fans and passive gpu cooling covered. Looking like sound insulation may be the only thing left.

Possibly the best direct equivalent one could possibly think of...

It's possible, but it won't be the best at what it does.

Water cooling maybe?

Even with a 1u there is probably room for a water block, then just use a watercooling setup mounted to the outside of the unit.

I can't think of any other options since you really don't have room in 1u for a quiet fan.

water cooling is not an option, the end user's will not be technically inclined and no way to remote support that, need a "forget it" solution.

Since the units are basically dumb terminals, yes that is an option. Not sure about activating speed controls of any kind since there will be noone even looking at these unless it breaks.. how reliable is cooln quiet as far as fans not spinning up when they are supposed to etc..

Cool & Quiet doesn't spin up the fans, it just varies the CPU speed depending on load. If the CPU is loafing around doing nothing, it can cut it's speed to reduce heat output and thereby reducing noise output.

alright, looks like were going to just order about 1 each of like 10 diff fans and test them. Seems to be the best option.
