did you actually read the article?? it backs up data to HDD's during a power outage.

yes, its a million dollars to own, and the compatible hardware to make use of it isn't cheap either, but the point is that it exists, and it is an order of magnitude better than hard disk storage. eventually, devices like I-RAM will be developed with high capacities and affordable costs. it might take 10-20 years before we see an affordable 100Gb RAMdrive in the consumer market, but at least we can look forward to something better than the sad limitations of mechanized magnetic storage.

Even the 100gig to 200 gig solid state drives cost like 10,000. That just kills any interest to me.
 
people were saying the same thing about drives with capacities over a few hundred MB not 10-15 years ago....now look, you can get 250gb for <$100

I dont see this being 100 years away....i think it will be here much sooner than many think.

precisely my point. what seems impossible today may be commonplace 10-20 years from now. i mean do people honestly believe that with all progress being made with CPUs, GPUs, FSBs, and System RAM, that the industry would sit idly by, while the physical limitations of mechanical hard drives created an exponentially tightening performance bottleneck over the next two decades. everything else will be unfathomably better/more affordable; why not RAMdrives?

EDIT: in the future, i believe systems will have differentiated storage, with RAMdrives for circumstances where performance is critical (OS installations, game installs, pagefiles if they still exist), and huge magnetic drives for archival information where performance is subservient to capacity (media files, documents, etc.).

Sorry, I didn't mean to insult others on this thread. However, I don't believe with the leaps that flash memory has taken over the past two years, that permanent storage for PCs based on this technology will go unnoticed and unused.

the great thing about flash is that it is static, not its speed. its ridiculously slower than hard disks, let alone RAMdrives. unless flash becomes cheaper per Gb than hard disk storage in the distant future, i see its use being relegated to novel tech like the "instant-on" features to be included in Vista.
 
Don't forget that HD technology will continue to evolve with the usual breakthrus. With perpendicular recording, we are essentially multiplying the number of heads; what if, unlike present drives, all of these heads could be used simultaneously? Could one 3.5 drive with this outperform a raid-50 array with single-head-R/W? There's alot of possibilities and a mature technology always has the advantage.

mechanical drives will always be limited by their seek times, and hence will always be less effective for rapid I/O than non-mechanical storage.
 
Pfft, I thought this might be something new. It's been around for at least a year now - notice that there are 16 memory boards in each 3u unit in the thing, and they spec the max for those 3u things as 128GB, or 8GB each memory board. If you look at the pictures of the memory board on page 110, you see that they have 8 sets of memory per side, or 512 MB per set. Ram density has increased over the past year - I wouldn't be surprised if you could make this same thing with 2GB/set now, leading to 512 GB of ram per 3u.

In time everything will get better and cheaper. Just think 10 years ago if you wouldve told someone you could get a 250GB SATA HD from compusa for 60bux they wouldve laughed at you like you were a fool.
