You'll see my suggestion (quoted below for convenience)

To the OP - maybe go for something from Highpoint - their 'Rocket' range (1640 4-channel SATA RAID 5 Host Adapter - approx £80). Reasonably priced; however should you need more capacity - 2220 8 Channel SATA II Host Adaptor - approx £180.

EDIT: The above was what Lithium726 was replying to when the 'GOLD STAR' suggestion was made :D

Strike me up for a PLATINUM STAR ? :p

Personally, I think my rudeness was called for.


I had respect for mikeblas for all the work he did on YURT (see folding forum), but in this thread, he has showed me that he is narrow-minded. Don't get me wrong, I am too - but I admitted that. I told him explicitly that his opinions would not change my mind or my opininons. Yet, he forced them on me like Paris Hilton forced condoms onto her lovers (how's that for an analogy?).

For example I keep really important stuff backed up on 2 separate HDDs, with a further backup to DVD. 3 separate locations. Man... GenMay's not even this odd.

As for controller choices, Areca makes "t3h shiznit". Expect to pay accordingly. It's probably overkill for your application. HighPoint makes a decent series of RAID cards, or so I've heard. I can't use mine until I get a new motherboard in. They're about $250-275. On the cheap end of things, there's plain-old sata controllers. I like the AOC-SAT2-MV8 from SuperMicro for about $100. For the REALLY CHEAP setup, wait until your local Best Buy has a deal on 2-4 port controllers. They can get to be free after rebates. You've just got to have enough slots to set it up.

Dude - sorry to have to put you right again, but 'goodnight' isn't a word. There's a space between good & night. Again, apologies dude; however you do seem to walk in to them!

Whether you respect me or not, RAID 5 is no excuse to do backups less frequently because RAID 5 arrays are not immune to failure.

but they are less prone to total catastrophic failure. i'm less likely to lose my data if one drive goes bad compared to RAID0, but the total amount of space is quite high for the number of drives.

ever heard of a phillips curve? RAID5 is the perfect blend of redundancy and space.

Sure; I've never argued this, other than to point out that you still need a backup, and the higher availability of a RAID5 array means it isn't any reason to backup less frequently.

Given that you still do need a backup, RAID5 is truly a win only when availability is a high goal, as Unhappy pointed out a while ago.

"Perfect tradeoff" is very much application-dependent. That's why other useful choices are available, such as RAID6 and RAID0.

Dude - the term in itself if perfectly correct; however if you're going take the stance that I should wish each & every person the appropriate farewell or greeting for their given time zone, then fair enough - I admit that perhaps I could have been a little more attentive to my audience. That said I would point out that that the internet by its very nature (always on etc.) is multi-national. Can you see where I'm going with this? :)

As for you being more of a 'math/science guy', surely you properly grasp the concept of probability and as such advocate the investment in appropriate precaution? ;)
