Does anybody know when the next generation of 1TB+ drives will hit the streets and how big will they be when they are formated to NTFS?

The reason I ask is I have 2 500GB and one 400GB hard drives. When 1TB+ drives come out I was thinking of putting my 3 smaller drives in a RAID0 and use the 1TB+ drive as my backup.

well then the aray will set up all the drives as 3 400gb drives costing u 200gb

better to just use equal size drives

1TB (advertised) formats out to 931GB.

well it was part of the equation so u got part of an answer

The Western Digital 1TB drive used to be on sale at BB for about $279.99. Price went up by $80 since then. As mentioned, the drives are 931mb when formatted to NTFS. I would wait until the new Seagate series comes out. Give it some time and prices will fall.

Umm, 1TB drives have been out for several months now, so I don't know what you are asking.

Actually, he did answer your question. Raid only calculates to the smallest drive available. So, if you have a 20, 20, and 40, the array will only build to 3x20GB drives. In addition, never, ever use (R)aid 0 for a backup. You will lose all your data if a drive goes or if it corruption occurs.

I think you were actually thinking of JBOD to use the entire space instead of Raid 0.

I mean bigger than 1TB, like 1.2 or 1.4TB. That's what I'm asking. When do the bigger than 1TB drives come out.

Not any time soon. The big manufacturers just came out with their respective 1TB lines, so it'll probably be another 8-12 months before another model comes out.

Personally I could care less about size,1Tb is enough. What I want is more speed, and lots of it.Larger caches, and higher spindle speeds, etc.
