i have my RAM runnin at 2t right now and i was wonderin if there was any significant performance increase from 2t to 1t...and if so, is there any risk in changin it? i didnt think so...but just double checkin as im probably gonna start to try overclockin soon
 
depends if you have A64 or P4 system.

P4's should be fine with 2T. that way you can get higher FSB (which the P4 likes).

what kinda of memory is it (brand, model number)? most "good" ram can do 1T at stock speed/timings. if you have crappy ram, it might not be stable at 1T.

For A64, it makes a pretty big differance (in benchmarks). in everday apps, i dont think theres a noticeable differance. you might get like 1-3 fps more in games. this is the results from my system:

2T
everest latency: 52ns
sandra bandwidth: 5600mb/s

1T
everest latency: 43.6ns
sandra latency: 5800mb/s

wow, that's a surprisingly large difference. i need to go back and test, as i remember seeing ~4ns higher, not 8-9 :p
 
i agree. also, 1T or 2T seems to be mostly a memory controller thing more than ram.

a side note, that EL rev2 will fly with 2.5-3-3 timings. i wouldn't be surprised if you can get it over 275mhz :D

no time for real benches, getting really late here, but here's 1T vs 2T for me. this is at 229x12 with 2.5-2-2-10 timings

Do you guys think I could up to 1T on my Corsair Xms 512mb Pc3200??? Atm it's at 200mhz, it has a heatspreader aswell if that would help??

Here is some CH results at 10x240 and a whole lot of crap in the background:

1T: 39.6 ns

2T: 44.3

Bandwidth doesnt matter on S939.

nice specs, definitely set the memory to 1T and also try overclocking it a bit and see if your system is stable.

If that's true, why would alot of high-end ram come with them. I know for looks, but I doubt they'd stick it on if it gave a negative impact?

because enough people think they help. also, it helps protect the ram from damage, and looks pretty.

now, i ask a question. surely you know of G.Skill, the greatest TCCD ram mfg ever. do they have heatspreaders? no.
they cater to the extreme enthusiasts who go for performance over looks, thus negating any reason for heatspreaders.

And TwinMOS, the greatest UTT dumper in the industry, does not use heatspreaders for their Speed Premium.
 
ok cool, i got the a64 tweaker thing and disabled 2t and my latency went from 53ish to 44ish...nice...now i should try some overclockin once i install my xp-90c :)

i'm still not getting why you guys are seeing a larger change from 2T to 1T than baron and i are..

Heres with the Idle cycle counter enabled, 12 Tras:

1T: 41.0ns
2T: 45.9ns

Still a 12% increase...

I think people just dont know how to tweak their ram.

5 Tras, Idle enabled:
1T: 43.6
2T: 47.1

That's an 8% increase. It's... weird. It's only an 8% increase but, in the end it still has a higher latency
 
ok i tried runni 1t trhough a64 tweaker using hte "start settings at startup" but it locks up my computer...so what value do i change in the bios (i have a msi k8n platinum 4 sli) cause there isnt a value that says exactly "Command Rate" or somethin like that...
 
You may have a hard time running 1T with a new Rev E chip, especially if you have TCCD based memory. I dont know how it is with the higher voltage stuff but with TCCD memory the memory controller is just crap. I have a 3200+ Venice and OCZ PC3200 Platinum Rev2 and it wont overclock 1:1 with a 1T command rate.

though i was trying DS + DS + SS before (s754, 3 dimms), and something doesn't seem right, i have a suspicion it's the odd number of sides, but i'm not sure if it really matters.

I'm sure you turned bank interleaving off for it... right? However, doesn't DS+SS work? I guess that is already known to work fine anyway. Still strange that the E4 revision cant do that, even on the 754 platform.
 
tried just about everything i could think of, it was just being weird. i honestly haven't tried DS + SS yet though.. hmmm :)

Do I have the option on some BIOS' to select 1T? Or do I HAVE to use the A64 Tweaker?

almost all bios's have an option. the only cases i know of is if your bios doesn't support the cpu (normally defaults to 2T, as demonstated by my k8n neo + newark), or you have a C0 revision clawhammer, which is 1T only :D

My Asus A8V-e Deluxe doesn't have the option for 1T or 2T, and it autos it to 2T, so A64 Tweaker is necessary. :/

I had some of this and their pc4000 and 1T would not run faster than ~220. I then picked up some pc3200 supertalent and hit 250 2.5-3-3-10 stable. Still not sure what chips they are...anyone? Cpu-z tells me they're from ma labs and the pcb is xerox...samsung perhaps?
