I'm about to do my first OC and would like some feedback on the best and safest way to do this. Here are my specs:

Phenom x4 965 BE
4GB G. Skill Ram
ASUS M4A87TD
Sapphire 6850
HAF 922 case
Corsair 650 watt PSU
Cooler Master 212 Plus


Right now the stock CPU is at 3.4 GHz and from the research I've done on this forum 3.8GHz is highly likely while 4GHz is more risky.
 
I have the same processor as you with a Corsair H50 on an MSI 790FX-GD70.
Make sure you have Core Temp and Prime95 installed.

Go into your BIOS, increase the FSB a little (default 200). I'd say increase by about 5 or 10Mhz initially. Boot, and run Prime 95 for about an hour (30min at the very least). Have CoreTemp running too so you can monitor temps. Do not allow your processor to go above 60. (62 is the rated max, but you don't wanna run you processor at the rated max temp).

Eventually, you'll reach a point where you get an unstable OC (one of the Prime95 workers will fail dropping the load on that core to 0%, or you'll BSOD, or your computer will refuse to POST). At this point, you can either set the FSb back to the last stable config and sit back satisfied, or you can try bumping up the CPU VID voltage, and NB voltage) and continue overclocking.

Some notes:

FSB and HTT are the same for AMD processors. They may be used interchangeably.

Some 965BE / motherboard combos do well with high FSB/low multipliers. In this case, after reaching the max FSB your comp is stable at, you might want to try dropping the multiplier to x16 (default x17), and increase FSB further.

Increasing the FSB will also make your RAM run faster. For that reason, you might need to increase the DRAM voltage and/or Northbridge voltage too.

I run my 965BE at 3.8Ghz (225 x 17), my RAM at relaxed timings of 9-9-9-24 (rated at 7-7-7-24), CPU voltage at 1.475, DRAM voltage at 1.65 and NB voltage at 1.35. At this config it runs at 56 degrees full load. However, do note I use liquid cooling. Your cooler might not necessarily be able to cool at the same levels.
