hello!

I'm attempting to do an hd mod on my ps2 and I need some help with the IDE cable.
What I want to do is have 1 HD connected to an IDE cable, and the ps2 HD connected to one end, and a USB2.0-to-ide (from an enclosure) on another connector all on the same cable.
only 1 device will ever try and control the drive while it is powered on.
The drive is powered down before going to the USB or back to the ps2.

I managed to actually get a cable setup, tedious as hell but I got it. But after testing I found that leaving an unpowered IDE2usb adapter pluged into the cable, but not plugged into PC, the ps2 refuses to see the HD. This also happens the other way, where the ps2 hd adapter is connected to the cable (and the drive) but the adapter isn't even connected to the system and unable to get any power, the IDE2usb adapter won't function (won't even power up the drive).

So my actual question, is there a way to put a switch on a couple of pins to make it so it'll work, or some other way? I'd like to have this setup so whenever I want to use the USB, i can just hook a usb cable upto the back of the ps2 and to my pc and transfer data over.

I am not going to comment on what you are trying to do, but honestly I think you might be doing this the hardest way possible to allow what you want to do. I cant say how you will do this, but just want to say that the information is "out there" and easy to search for. Sorry I cant be more helpful.
