im upgrading my aging computer... I wont have enough money for a full upgrade until next year. I currently have an X850pro modded to XT the rest of my system is in sig. I just RMA'd 2 sticks of corsair XMS and should be getting better ones for overclocking in a few weeks.

I was wondering would the:

HIS 1950 PRO

be better or the

Gecube 1950XT

NOTE: no debating about saving my money and upgrading later. I realize I cant get awesome performance, but as stated I wont have the money for that until early next year.

Thanks,
Falcon

The x1950XT, it may run hotter, but its got all 48 vertex shaders, and its overclocks decently (atleast better than the x1950pro)

Ive got an Antec truepower 2.0 550 will that be good enough to run this card?

didn't ATI say they will make an AGP version of the 2900 ??

and i know AGP mobo\s suppoert core2due a gigabyte one if i recall.

i think you should wait for that.

linky?

i thought they said 2600, and if so I might be able to run DX10 games okay but not run DX9 games as well as an X1950XT. I only have about $250 to spend and I have games my current card has been struggling with. namely FEAR, oblivion, and some of the newer games. Is BIOshock going to be DX10 only? I dont think they would do that. I really dont care much for crysis anymore. I just want to run games at 1440x900 with at least 2x AA at high detail. I would like CoH to run a little smoother as well as silent hunter 4. I also want at least shader model 3.0 so I can finally get some real HDR going on.

EDIT: not only that but my cpu is really going to be bottlenecked with the 1950XT, I dont think even a 2900pro AGP will be so much more of an increase.

I'd say XT as well, the psu should be fine. Even if the CPU is bottlenecking the graphics AA and AF run on the card itself so you can turn them up with no loss to performance in many cases.

For that price might as well check the hot forum and get 8800gts 256meg

I recently purchased the 1950XT by GeCube. It is a very solid upgrade for your system and should carry you for a year or so. Your power supply should not have a issue since it has two nineteen ampere rails for the twelve volt stepping.

Be aware however that your should check the tightness of the screws holding the heatsink. Many have reported abnormally high temperatures. Out of the box my, the XT I purchased would idle at 60 with a peak load of 105 using ATITool's (.27b1) rotating carpet benchmark. After removing the card, I found that only one of the screws was even close to being tight. I removed the entire heatsink, made this simple modification, applied AS5 and then equally tightened the four screws in a 'X' pattern. Idle now is 44 with peak load (rotating carpet) of 65 with fans set to 90 percent (fan monitoring within ATI Tool).

Good luck.

thanks everyone! what kind of increase in performance should I expect from this card? has anyone done a similar upgrade? any benchmarks would be nice, especially w/ oblivion and fear. Iam SO tired of the stuttering in fear when rounding a corner.

It's not a direct comparison but i've just upgraded from an nvidia 6800nu 128mb to a x1950 pro 512mb (going from agp to pci-e to muddy up the comparison even further) and i'm getting at least twice the framerates at the same settings.

In test drive unlimited and oblivion it's meant me going from 1024x768 hdr/no aa 15-20fps average, up to 1280x1024 (max res) 4x aa and hdr 25-35 fps average. If i was a 60 fps whore I could do that at 1280x1024 with hdr but just turning off AA.

You should get similar boosts or better.
