1920x1200 bang for the buck?

Looking for a new monitor setup, would like a large (24" or greater) 1920x1200 for my main. Not super concerned with quality, looking for bank for the buck. Currently looking at the iH-282HPB, does anyone know how the warranty and reliability are? Looking for other suggestions as well.

I also have a bunch of money in best buy gift cards but they don't have 1920x1200 monitors anymore. What I can do is use them to get a cheap second monitor if I need to.

Hah, I just saw that thread. I was disturbed when I saw that BB only had 1 monitor with that resolution, but I figured it was just them. When I went to new egg and saw they only had a handful out of hundreds of monitors I freaked out.

So I know my choices are limited, but I also know you guys know what's up and will help me find my best option. :D

Bang / buck = 1920x1080. We don't have a choice anymore. The manufacturers decided for us.

Staples often has decent prices on LCDs and you can make it a really good deal by using a $30 off $150 coupon.
*ninja edit* apparently they don't have any good deals right now though.

Thanks for the idea. I will keep an eye on them if I don't buy in the next day or two.

1920x1200 is a must. I'm on a 1080 monitor right now and it really bothers me. I would go higher than 1200 if I could.

John,

I've been looking at monitors for the last month and am being patient about pulling the trigger. My highest priority is a 1920x1200 resolution, whether that comes in 24"-28" I don't terribly care. I'll be focusing on resolution, panel type, and how that translates into performance/price.

I first read about the iH-282HPB today and am learning what I can about it. Otherwise it's been a choice between the Asus vw266h and the HP zr24w.

By price I am leaning toward the Asus vw266h. Normally it's $290 before tax, but I may be able to get one at an employee discount through family. It is currently out of stock for them, but an employee stated it appeared to only be out of stock, not discontinued.

If not for the discount I will be sorely tempted to pick up the HP for $340 refurbished. That is also before tax, but speaking to an HP rep they offered that they can usually waive shipping ($20) for first time customers. Earlier this month they were new at amazon for about $410 shipped, but prices have since risen $25 causing me to look at the refurbs. Refurb warranties are only 1 year, but very good if you have any problems. If I don't see a problem in the first year odds will be in my favor that it will last.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the excellent input Maestro.

I also was looking at the zr24w refurb, as I wanted to try an IPS panel. However, I got to try a (different) IPS panel and wasn't all that impressed with it. I was hoping the highly touted viewing angles would allow me to use for movie watching as well, but the IPS glow was annoyingly noticeable at a mere 30 degrees and bad at 45. Unless it was just a particularly poor monitor that makes me feel like IPS isn't worth the premium.

That takes me down to the ASUS or I-Inc, and I didn't see any information that led me to believe one is significantly better than the other. It does sound like there is poor quality control with the I-Inc though, so it's quality control vs bigger and cheaper.

I get extended warranty when I buy with my credit card, so that was the tiebreaker for me, and I went I-Inc.

Thanks again for the great input. If I remember I will post impressions when I get it next week. Interested to know what you go with as well.

I've had the Asus VW266H since christmas and I'm happy with it, I think its a pretty good value.

I-Inc 28 inch just arrived.

It was overwhelmingly bright out of the box. Turned down the brightness and fiddled with the contrast briefly, and I actually like the color a little better than the IPS panel (VP2365wb) I have sitting right next to it. I think it is very slightly washed out but the shadow detail is excellent, and the color calibration seems slightly warm which I prefer to the slightly cool that the IPS panel ended up at after calibration. There is a little backlight bleed at the edges, but not too bad. Less than my HannsG had. For a TN panel the viewing angle is very good from the sides and above; horrible from below though.

It did however have a stuck pixel in the mid upper right part of the screen. I was able to rub it out, but not convinced it will stay fixed. Debating on whether to return it.

Overall a very good first impression aside from the stuck pixel that I was able to fix.

Good to hear John. With the vw266h no longer available I'm going to a local tigerdirect to view the 282hpb in person. If I like what I see I will pick it up instead of the zr24w. The larger dot pitch might actually be nice, and for $250 I'm willing to gamble that mine can last several years.

I have been using the I-Inc iH282 for about 10 months now and I am quite pleased with it. In terms of stuck pixels, there were times that I could find one but then on the next day, it just disappears. That stuck pixel should go away on your monitor. If you are really bothered with it, they can replace it with another one.

Also, what color temperature are you using: Warm, Nature, Cool, or Custom? Brightness and Contrast?

I am using nature color temperature, 70 brightness 60 contrast right now. Haven't actually tried to set it up correctly yet. As I said, it's a tiny bit warm but close enough that I haven't bothered to tweak it out yet.

Is yours tweaked out? What did you set it at?

I just bought a set of three Asus VW266H monitors at the beginning of this month. Got them in at the beginning of this week and couldn't be happier. No stuck/dead pixels on any of them. Backlight bleed is almost non-existent (at least compared to my Samsung 2443BWX), with only a hint at the very top center and it is the same for all three monitors. Colors are great as well. Two were sequential serial numbers with the third a couple digits away. Very happy with the purchase.

You can still find them in stock online. It seems like I bought the last three SuperBiiz.com had in stock as they no longer show it available there. Nice thing is that Asus is running another rebate program this month of $30 per VW266H monitor. Maximum rebates is 2 per household. That is the same rebate they offered on them in January.

The VW 266H is one of Asus' bestsellers. Its fairly large at 25.5 inches, has a plethora of connections (except for USB) and is a 1900X1200, a size coveted by many. I owned one for a month and, was a great gaming & movie watching unit as long as the viewer remained centred. If I didn't own a U2311, at the same time, I would have probably kept the monitor.

There's plenty in Canada.

You mentioned centered viewer. How are the viewing angles on those? (I may pick one up if/when they come back in stock at best buy since I have those gift cards.)

It seems like the only new 1920x1200 monitors are expensive as hell compared to 1080p monitors. I was in the same boat as you, wanting to upgrade from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200. I eventually found a used Dell 2405FPW on craigslist and got that. Really happy with this monitor.
