19-inch LCD

I am shopping for a 19-inch LCD and I am looking into the Dell 1905FP and the Samsung
193P+.

I perfer 19-inch than other larger LCD because of the lower native resolution. I like the fonts to look bigger.

I read in this forum that the response time of 1905FP is 8ms but Dell web sites state both US and Canada, state that it has 20ms response time.

I do little gaming but I surf a lot. I also use MS Word, Excel, Visio and Photoshop. What do you suggest?

the Dell 1905FP was always based on a 20ms PVA panel from Samsung, which is where the spec on the site came from. About 2 months ago some shipments in France started to come with a new 8ms panel from AU Optronics, which turned out to be the same P-MVA panel as has been used in the Viewsonic VP191B (see thread in this forum for that).

Abotu a month ago, this started to happen pretty widely across europe, and certainly here in the uk. some ppl still get the older model, but many ppl seem to be getting the new 8ms version. You can check which version a model has by doing this:

1- Turn off your screen
2- Press simultaneously the 'Menu' and '+' button of the screen.
3- While holding the 2 buttons press now the 'Power' button.
4- Once the screen in ON, unpress the 3 buttons.
5- Go to OSD menu (by pressing 'Menu' button) then select the 'Reinit'
option (red point at the bottom of menu).
6- Select 'Factory' option.
7- You can see now the panel manufacturer

so get the place you order from to check if you're worried

if you're only an occasional gamer then it might not matter much anyway. The 20ms PVA panel which it was previously stocked with is not the best for gaming, but is still fine for some light occasional use. The picture quality, colours etc are very good though, and this screen gets some of the best reviews in the non gamers market really (see anandtech's review for instance). If you get the new 8ms AUO version then the pixel response time is much better and is pretty much one of the fastest screens out there at the moment, while still offering the other pros of the VA technology (namely good viewing angles, true 8bit colours, better movie playback etc when compared with fast TN film panels)


The Dell 1905FP (8ms version) and Samsung 193P+ are both based on VA variant technology and overdriven panels and so should be fine for some gaming. If you can get the Dell with the 8ms panel confirmed then it is certainly a good price.

So, there are 2 versions of 1905FP. I am not sure if I can specify this when I order from Dell.

yes there are two different versions, you could ask them to check for you first i suppose.

There is not much difference in the quality of the static imaging on the 2 panels, although the slight edge goes to the 20ms Samsung PVA panel. The image is said to be a little sharper, more colourful and clear. This is only because they have implemented overdrive to the 8ms AUO panel so something has to give somewhere there isn't a vast difference in the staic images, but the AUO certainly has the edge for pixel response by a considerable margin
