19" crt vs 17" lcd

I currently am using a 19" kds flat-screen crt monitor. It is a little rough on the eyes though because a general lack of clarity and sharpness.

I am thinking of selling it and going lcd, but a 19" would be a little heavy on the budget. I can certainly afford a 17" though.

anyone gone from a 19" crt to a 17" lcd? thoughts and opinions?
 
I went from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD and now I'm back to CRT again. Read my post in the "Samsung 710T vs. Samsung 172X" thread for reasons why I did so. My CRT is a high quality one though, so it may be different to you.
 
I too had a KDS 19" flat CRT model: AV-195TF and it was going bad on me as well. The text started to get quite blurry on the top and bottom areas mostly then the entire screen began to blure just within a week ago. Also the colors were totaly getting washed out very badly on mine so I came to the thought that the Sony Trinitron tube in this thing was just comming to its end of life after 4 years of use. So I began shopping around online and came across the NEC brand of CRT's and read alot of good reviews on the NEC Diamondtron series fo CRT's online and in these forums. I ended up purchasing an NEC FE991SB 19" flat CRT and I have to say man these Diamondtron series of NEC CRT's are very nice indeed. The colors and resolution are just really crisp especially in gaming.

I have the same NEC as my second monitor and I used to think that it was awesome. It was the brightest thing that'd ever graced my desk and was sharp to boot then I got a 19" LCD running on DVI and it completely dwarfs the fe991sb (in size, brightness, and clarity). Now I'm trying to sell it with a system, but everyone around my part of the world wants dell trash that costs more and runs slower. Ho hum.

I've read reviews on that particular model (FE991SB) that while it excels at colors in gaming, it falls short of displaying text. One reviewer went so far as to say that it's hard to get legible text under 12pt. Have you experienced this?

Oh not at all as I find the text clarity on the FE991SB model to be very crisp and very legible. Infact you can download a calibration program from NEC for their Diamondtron series of CRT's called Naviset which includes a 8pt text test screen so that you can see how well text looks while you calibrate your monitor which is pretty nice. But just to note I have noticed that if you turn on the "Super bright mode" button between levels 1 or 2 thats when text tends to get blurry. At level 1 brightness you can clearly see blurriness in text, and at level 2 text becomes even more blurry. But with out the Super bright mode feature on text is very crisp once your tune in the Contrast and brightness on the CRT. I would recommend using the "super bright mode" for adding a more bright interface when gaming or viewing movies as thats where this mode really comes in handy.

Other than that for the $180.00 that I spent on this monitor I have to say it's money well spent for the over all image quality. Infact if you cant get your hands on this model I would say spend the extra $100.00 and go for the next higher end model the Diamond Pro series model 930SB-BK which gives you even higher resolutions. :)
