I'm (HOPEFULLY) going to be purchasing a new CRT in the coming months because the lag on LCDs is too much for me (the graphical detail on current games is too high for LCDs to reproduce in fast-paced games imho). Anyway, I've been looking at some models in the $200 range including the Samsung 997 (18" viewable) although it got mixed reviews from users. I was wondering what suggestions you guys might have for getting a new CRT monitor. Preferably I don't want to spend more than $300-$350. Thanks.

I've used a Viewsonic P95fb+ for over a year and it's pretty good. I think they retail for about $200 now. Games, movies, photoshop stuff is great on it. Text is not super-sharp, but that's just compared to an LCD.

I just got a Dell 2005fpw, so I don't use it anymore, though (don't game as much as I used to).

I love my 997,only gripes is my logitech X-530 subwoofer needs to be set over 4 feet away not to distort it and my speakers cant sit on the desk cause they screw it up, so im on some shitty headphones with the speakers in my closet. oh and did need some geometry,brightness adjustment out of the box

This is what I've always heard- the Viewsonic P95f+, which I own, is the worst 19" I've used, the other two being the PF790 and the Iiyama 451. The last two are far sharper (or should I say, sharp at all) at 1600x1200 when compared to the P95, and are LCD crisp at 1280x1024. The P95 can't match these displays at 1600x1200 when it's running at 1280x1024 in terms of sharpness.

Yup, the 930SB is a no-brainer when it comes to 19" CRTs...
 
I've got a pair of the Samsung 997DF 19" CRT's. They are not the best monitors but aren't too bad for the money. I bought the first one to replace my aging 20" Sony then bought another one so that the machine would have matching screens. I ended up paying $360 for the pair.

I tried the 997DFs and the first one was plain terrible as compared to my earlier 17" Samsung 700IFT CRT. No clarity, terrible geometry, the screen was clearly curved horribly to one side, color patches, dark left bottom corner and non-uniform brightness. Returned it for another replacement which was somewhat better but still nothing as compared to the flat pin-sharp 700IFT. Finally returned it and paid the re-stocking fee. Am saving / waiting for a 19" LCD now. Using a friend's spare 17" CRT LG flatron in the meantime is still better than the 997df.
 
I have to agree. I had a 997DF for all of about 2 days, the thing was horrible. The chainlink pattern I kept seeing in it was just unbearable. I thought it was just me, but reading around shows quite a few other people with the same issues. Other then that, it could have been a nice monitor. Glad I took it back tho, ended up getting a Sony 19" HS94P, couldn't be happier :p .
 
Alright, so I posted a new thread, which I apologize about, about basically the same thing...
But you guys say the Mitsubishi Diamondtron 930sb is the best, no questions asked?
Anyone know where I could get this monitor, in Canada?
 
I had that samsung too. it is a piece of overpriced crap. total garbage. My 6 year old Sony Trinitron 19" is infinitely better.
 
I have had an excellent experience so far with my 997df. It's a great monitor IMO and I have not noticed any of the problems that others have been complaining about (except for a minor whitebleed).
 
I own the NEC/MITSUBISHI Diamondtron FE991SB, and it's simply the best monitor I've ever used. So, I would definitely recommend the NEC/Mitsubishi Diamondtron 930sb.
 
Ditto; I own the identical cousin to the Mitsu 930SB, the NEC Multisync FP912SB. I purchased the FP912SB for $299 in May 03 and it's simple the best monitor I've ever owned..... high refresh rates at extended resolutions with a sharp, bright picture. If your going CRT, the Mitsu 930SB is the monitor to get.

Yes Trinitron's are great, but last I checked still very pricey. For CRT's the Mitsu 930SB is the best bang for the buck.

Although, after buying the Samsung 930B 19" LCD for my wife's work PC over the weekend for $349 I'm rethinking the whole LCD thang for gaming. Tried it out on my gaming machine and it matches pretty evenly with my NEC FP912SB, not as good but close enough to consider......
 
I'm not sure where you can get a 930SB in Canada. It seems that the major retailers don't carry it anymore...

if you're 230V there it will be called a 93sb. same thing no 0.
 
I want to put in another vote for my monitor. The Viewsonic P95+
Knock it all ya want, I love the beast. I personally find it very crisp at high resolutions, with my 9800XT. I haven't compared to the Mitsubishi Diamondtron 930 though, so put some salt on that recomendation if that 930 truly is better.

I agree with this theory. If you don't want to spend the $$$ to try a PVA LCD, you might buy an off-lease 20"-21" Trinitron (Dell, Compaq, Mitsubishi, etc). to keep you going in the meantime. I just returned (because I bought the Samsung 193p+) a 21" Dell P1110 that I got in "like new" condition. You should be able to find them locally for about $140 US/$200 CAN. Condition will vary, but there's so many out there that it's a buyer's market and some dealers will let you try for few days and let you return it if you don't like it.
Some of these were over $1000 new, so they are far superior to the new CRTs you are considering.

I assume you're not talking about major retialers like BB and CC. any examples of places I could find this kind of equipment at?
 
Can anyone reccomend an online retailer where I can check out the prices for the Mitsubishi Diamondtron 930sb? I didn't see it on Newegg or Zipzoomfly.
 
basically any aperture grille CRT is going to give you the best image quailty out there until you get to things like the 12,000 dollar LCD's.

Aperture Grille isn't really a guarantee for superior image quality IMO. Besides, image quality is a relative term and all depends on what you're going to use the monitor for.

I live in Canada and the off-lease Trinitron CRT's seem to be available at almost every small independent shop
in my area, as well as online. Just search Google for Dell P1110, for example. The one I bought was $CAN 168 (=$US 136) and it was pretty much mint.

The CRTs are so heavy I don't think you would want to get one over the internet. I would use the yellow pages until you find one or search Google using nearby cities in the search box.
 
Sun GDM-5410 (made by sony). I have one and I think it's pretty good.
They are 21" and on ebay for cheap.
