18gb or 12gb (Two different sets)

It will be "alright" in the sense that nothing will fry, but there's a fairly good chance it wouldn't be stable, or may not even POST for that matter. Mixing and matching memory kits has been pretty much considered a no-no since the Dual-Channel days, ranging from not POSTing, to bad performance. If you factor in different DIMM densities, then you're just asking for trouble :D Sort the NewEgg reviews on almost any high-review memory with lowest first, and you'll run into a few people who purchased two kits at the same time and are whining that their system isn't working. G.Skill seems to respond to the majority of them, explaining that they do not guarantee compatibility between even like-kits as they have not gone through their matching procedure. EDIT: Oh, and more importantly, if the length in time between purchases is more than 4 or 5 months, then it's a fair bet that even two of the same part numbered kits could end up with completely different memory ICs!

Since you have them, I'd definitely try it, but don't buy it with the sole intention of having 18GB :) If you're content with 12GB though, then by all means have at it! :D

EDIT: That isn't to say things can't work, and work well though. For example my AMD system doesn't give a rats arse WHAT I throw in it lol I chucked in some older PSC IC based Kingmax Nano Gamer (DDR2-2200) 2x2GB modules in with some much newer (unknown IC, possibly PSC) Patriot Gamer 2 2x4GB, and it works very well. Performs better with the modules mixed between the channels, instead of each kit on it's own channel, so something to play with :p
