Well, having no luck finding a good deal in forums, I broke down today and ordered up a 1801 from dell. It was between the dell and the AG Neovo 19. I got free shipping and used a 30 dollar coupon so it came out to 540 shipped (no tax). Unfortunatley Dell put a generous time to ship of the 23rd, but in my experience with lots of Dell orders the time has always been less so I hope it gets here by Saturday. I will post my thoughts on it after I get a chance to wring it out.
 
Do have the DELL 1801FP pivot function to change between portrait and landscape view?
 
Yes it can pivot, i havent tried it yet though. I got mine this week and it is f&!king sweet I have to admit and zero dead pixels. I do notice some slight ghosting but hey its a 30ms display and i dont use it for gaming so i dont really care, i got it for $491 with the 10% off + $30 off plus free shipping..

this thing is so damn bright i had to lower the brightness to around 40% just to be able to look at it lol

Do you have your refresh synced to the display settings? I read on several other forums that this montior does not ghost at all if you lock it in.
 
Are you using analog or DVI connection with the 1801FP?

How would you describe a pure black and a pure white screen on the 1801FP?
(How much is it gray or colored and homogeneus?)

How is a colored text shown on a colored background?

How are small texts look like? (Readable?)
 
After I install my new videocard this weekend, I'm going to start using my brand new 1801. My father is a college professor, so he got me an awesome deal on it. Only $430.

how do you do this? my refresh is at 60hz, thats what i assume it should be? also since my vidcard has both dvi and analog inputs can i connect my 1801 to the digital and a crt to my analog and use both?
 
You can usually lock in your refersh rate per resolution in either major driver set... It's something like refresh rate overides for the nvidia driver I think, forget off the top of my head what it is for ATI.

You should be able to drive your LCD and CRT as desribed with either ATI or Nvidia driven cards as long as they support dual monitors.

It's in, and that is fast since I ordered it two days ago.

Anyway...

Lets see... I am comparing this to a FP 791 from BenQ which is essentially flawless in my eyes (bright, no dead pixels, no perceptible ghosting, good dot pitch... only issue is somewhat bad view angles). Also note that this first round of testing is done on the analog connection with a 5200 Ultra ViVo through a MiniView KVM (4 port, USB, HQ cables)... tests to follow with 9800XT on straight DVI connection.

I have discovered a dead pixel... one, stuck off black. Took me a while to find it, so not bad. Used the tools at http://www.monitorsdirect.com/toolkit/index.shtml (anyone know of better tools?)

Not as bright as expected, but I guess serviceable. About 20% dimmer than the BenQ, have to leave this on at 100% where as the BenQ was at about 75%.

Colors are good. Great even.

At it's native resolution everything looks really good, but the screen dooring is apparent to a minor degree compared to the BenQ with it's somewhat smaller dot pitch.

No ghosting in UT2K4 at all, and only a minor amount in the above linked test for ghosting. I locked the refresh to 75hz and it just works. Need to try a 'darker' game.

Not very good outside default res at any refresh. In fact, it sucks at my fav res of 1024x768, very noticeable interpolation of pixels.

Amazing view angles compared to my beloved BenQ.

Rotate with NVrotate works fine, but on my desk it's awkward as I have to first pull the monitor forward to clear an overhanging shelf with KVM and Cable modem on it. The stand is heavy and the height adjust works fine, but it can lock at the bottom and the button is awkward to reach. Cable minder in back of stand is nice touch. Angle and left right rotation on the horizontal is good, easy swing but firm enough to stay where you want it.

Comes with all cables, but the quick install guide was it for instructions. USB ports are nice, but I can see them being useless to you if you rotate the screen much. Setup takes about 5 minutes.

Bezel is super thin, powersupply is internal.

Depth however is a bit more than I expected and this is a heavy LCD display all around (good or bad, depending on how you view it).

OSD controls are awkward since there are only three buttons.

Auto adjust works great.

Only other flaw besides minor screen dooring and one dead pixel (which is honestly not noticeable since it's black) is that just above center on the right edge of the panel is a 'bright patch' that extends in a bit over an inch in decreasing intensity, manifesting as a half sphere/circle... it's only really noticeable on a black field and not in any other color range. Remainder of the panel is even more uniformly shaded in black than the BenQ.

I will post more once I get a DVI connection going with it.
 
I have the 1801FP as well. I have a stuck green subpixel that is only noticeable on dark shades. Bugs the heck out of me because I know about it, but I'm trying not to let it mar this excellent screen otherwise. I also have the aforementioned backlight leakage, mine is more center of the right bezel. I exchanged it twice trying to get a perfect panel, the second one had 4 dead sub pixels, and the third one was perfect until I moved it and a green subpixel died so it could no longer produce any shade other than blue, red, or black in one pixel. Annoying to say the least as my desktop is white, and IRC is white, etc etc. So they're both going back and I'm keeping the original one. I'm waiting for another sale and then I'll probably pick up another panel. Ghosting is minimal in UT2k4 as mentioned before, I don't notice it anymore, and I don't mind the slight softening it gives to edges as I move. Makes things seem a little more realistic to me. Can't wait for it to go on sale, if ever, otherwise I'll just pay full price.
 
I have zero dead pixels and zero backlight leaks on my 1801, and the funny thing is I dont use it for gaming whatsoever. Its for 2d apps only which is fine. overall I love it, and it actually makes my sony trinitron crt look extremely blurry compared to it. For gaming the crt is great though.
 
how often does dell run sales on these??? i want one, but can't afford the 579.00
 
Atleast on the 2001fp, they've been running deals pretty regularly. Every other week or so. I bought a 2001fp on sale in january.

it was on sale today. but i don't want that monitor. it is too big for my desk and my wallet

Can anyone test the things on a DELL 1801FP that I've written eralier?

- Readability of small texts (6 pixel)
- Readability of colored texts before colored background
- Pure black an pure white. How it looks like?

Now I can see what kind of problem there could be with very small texts. (On the other hand I don't read such small texts on my CRT monitor, but this is also an advantage to the CRTs. I hate it when I want to change to a more expensive and more modern technology and that technology is worse in more aspects than the older one. :mad: )

Is it typical for all LCD monitors or are there big differences?

i dunno i havent seen a large variety of lcds in person, but even though the 1801 isnt perfect i love it.. Especially since its so small it fits on my desk with no problem. And 98% of all text i can read with no problems what-so-ever. So i'm happy with it, even though it is a little pixelated looking and has some slight ghosting
