looking to buy a new mid-range system (- not sure whether to go amd or intel

for amd, i was given advice on this:

that looks like a really good deal - not looking to spend much over $200 for cpu + mobo.

is there a comparable intel mobo (ddr3) and cpu in that price range? dual core, as i assume i wont be able to get quad in that price range.

mobo doesn't need anything else besides what's on the amd (msi) board

hmm - should i just go the amd route then? is that 2.8 intel comparable or faster than the amd x2?

The E7400 is comparable to the Phenom II 550 in terms of performance, and can also overclock very well if you're interested in that. Both the Intel and AMD routes would give you good performance.

Those G41's etc although cheaper have a very poor onboard video.

I'm assuming your thinking on-board video! If so go AMD route, search the forums for yourself if you wish but video wise I'm sold on the 780's 785's, 790's.

My suggestion get a 790 with sideport memory if you can find a deal. Processor is up to you personally I'm thinking a athlon II 240 or similar. Probably endup in the 150 range.

Makes a perfect netflix or reasonable desktop, low heat and noise.

Killer would be a 790 with a phenom 700 series. (modest gaming possible, really needs ddr3)
Budget 780 with a athlon II. (come in less than 200, perfectly fine machine cheap ddr2)

785 is simply a low power 780 with added overclockablility.
790 if it comes with side band and good cooling a good graphics card.
Any would be good for streaming video, BTW get a HDMI port.

so you're saying that cpu has 4 cores from the fab - but only 2 enabled - and there is a chance to enable the other two?

that msi mobo look good?
 
i ended up going with a gigabyte board (not the same one) - and the X3 tri core 2.8ghz black amd.
