Check this out.. This is my buddy's system. He has a P4 2.4 OC'd to 2.8. He has the stock HSF, and 4 case fans. Nothing special really... His MoBo is an Asus P4S800

The room temperature is 60°F.

Is this possible?!? I have never heard of a fairly stock air cooled temp this low..

here is a screenshot of Asusprobe. It idles around 14°c sometimes.

possible, but not likely... Motherboard probes are generally good for relative measurements, not absolute ones.

Temps seem way too low, get something like Motherboard Monitor or Hardware Monitor and check the CPU's diode temperature.

My program reads 44C idle (P4 2.4C stock... :( ) and 59 C load (!!), room temperature is 70 F.

The probe reads only 32 C though. I think his temp is probably around 30 C.

Ok, update... It's the board..

My friend who did a bad bios flash, just got a new board, and just installed it - the same model as the guy with the crazy low temps..

With the case open (no side) he is getting 11°C !!

What's up with the P4S800?!?! Anyone else with that mobo to compare?

That sucks.

nah, cant be on air and stock cooling at that. i am running TEC cooling and my LOAD temp is 12c @ 3.6ghz <2.4c> he cannot be idle at 18 on air and STOCK HSF. impossible. that probe is prolly reading some other sensor or something, because numerous other things in the case run around 18c. like the ambiant temp and possibly the southbridge. northy gets a bit hotter and so does the PWM mosfets.

dude.....I have NO FANS..shit, I have no cooling at all. ...and my temp is -18c. WOW.

Shut up.

Anyways, to the original poster, it isn't possible, motherboard temperature is higher than cpu temperature, you see a problem there?

Exarctly

That thing must be missing a 0 or something... :p

If the ambient temps are low enough, then you could get down that far on stock, but I doubt it. I'm pretty sure that my furnace would keep idle above 10c even if ambient was -20c. ;)

I have heard that Asus PC Probe doesn't get the temperature from the cpu diode. It might get a temperature from a thermistor in the socket. Anyone care to verify this?

it isn't possible for cpu temps to be lower than mobo temps. not on air-cooling. you telling me that a mobo nb/sb mosfets/caps can produce 90w of heat? no thank you.

you cannot get lower than ambient on air cooling... it simply isnt possible... you cant do it on water cooling eather... the only way to do it is on phase change or with a pelt... it isnt reading something right... i know for a fact that asus probe dosent read any of the sensors on my board right... get another moniter

Well, I've a P4 2.6 HT @ 2.80 with the original intel HS and I've nice temps too.
My program (MBM5) reads 19ºC (cpu) and 27ºC (MB) idle.
I also had my cpu at 3.1ghz with 27ºC idle and 39ºC load! :D
Now, I'm waiting for the thermalright slk-947U to continue overclocking.

P.S.: Sorry my english but i'm a portuguese boy :p

I say its possible since my Pentium4 is stock on 3Ghz and i overclocked it to 3.75Ghz and my temps aren't bad stock cooling.

I don't think it's possible to get such temps, especially since you're on stock cooling.

Btw, how come you guys say that the CPU temp can't be lower than the MB temp?

At idle, my CPU is about 37 and my MB about 40. Both Asus PC Probe and MBM5 give me the same result.
Of course under load, the CPU goes up and the MB only increase a lil.

Isn´t 60 fahrenheit hotter than 18 degrees??? It´s impossible to aircool lower than ambient.

maybe its a really cold room??

but it does seem that the stuff is way off. when my room is 70F(21C) my CPU/MB are about around 80F(27C)

his temps are off, but i've seen idle temps at 0C with air cooling..

that's what living in CT and "winter" states are good for ;)

As you could see i was using Asus Probe and MotherBoard Monitor and the temps where the same. It was indeed a cold room bout 16°C but i'm using my stock cooler overclocked to 3.75Ghz (stock 3Ghz) and i am getting those temps.

No way, something is not reporting right. Maybe the probes are f*ck up.

4F of ambient is possible on air at idle, its unlikely though.

Mobo running hotter than cpu is possible, but uncommon, (overclocked ECS K7S5A had this problem).

Asus screwing up its temperature reading is average.

I know of a few boards where the BIOS chips got hotter than the CPU did... ;)

my case/mobo temp is always a little higher than my processor...
my proc is usually 27C idle, and my mobo is around 30C idle...
this is probly wrong tho...
i have one of those big zalman CNPS-7000CU heatsinks, and the heatsink dosnt even get that warm...

And both of you posting about this crap are total DAIRY PRODUCTS....nuff said.

go read up on thremal conductivity... you'll understand why it isnt possible... now your ambient may be running hotter becuase the sensor is sitting right next to a mosfit, but i can garrentee you proc is not running cooler than ambient, if it is... you better post your findings to the major colleges real quick.... cause they'll make you rich if you've found a way to cool below ambient without phase change or massive ammounts of energy...

gah... where #rotor when you need him

That is true. Man, I could use money like that... ;)

I wish there was a way to access the thermal diode in the core itself. So far, I only know how to access the sensor in the bottom of the socket. Although, the Tyan Tiger 100 I have lets me access CPU 1's thermal diode. This poor PII runs 80c 24/7. ;)

Or with your radiator mounted inside a window AC unit. :D

well it is possible on air cooling but very hard to accheive unless you are seriously lucky when u put it together or you got a good setup and some money.

yes it is. My dp102 did it finely. You gotta get it nice and cold and it will hold the coolness for the rest of the day. Im on watercooling now though and my temps are hotter though. but cooling is un-audible now.

that would be both phase change and massive amounts of energy.... but you get a chilly room as well

WRONG

again... it isnt possible... quit spreading this crap.... it is not possible....

Unless you have about 10 degrees ambient temp and took that pic before temps got a chance to rise, your temp diode is probably showing pretty way off.

computer on 18c air cooled...yeah right...wanna buy some swampland or a shiny bridge to Manhattan?

computer off @ 18c...i can believe that.

when i used (older) asus boards...i also found this to be true...
you'ld think after all this time they would've fixed the frikken problem...
tho they put out boards with a higher than default FSBs to win in the reviews..
..so maybe the temp thing is intentional...to fool the less than [H]ard.

good luck with your dreams,i mean temps,PlaneCrazy's buddy and
Valkerie.

dairy products....hahaha & lol
