Alright, I'm going to be getting a 17" monitor, because it's time to get rid of this old 7 year old CRT. (Even though it's still strong and healthy)

I'm looking at these 17's I'm kind of aiming towards the Samsung or the Planar, because I heard they would be the most reliable.

Also wanted to know, since all the monitors have their "Native Resolution" or "Recommended Resolution" that means that I have to run it at that resolution?
 
ya depending on what u do i would keep to 8ms speed for video games, i got that samsung in 19" 8ms works great for hl2 and doom. u should buy my 19" samusng lol
 
My brother has that Samsung (his is labeled 712N, but it's the same thing as the 710N) and it's frickin' wonderful. All he does is game. In fact, I'm thinking about getting one myself.
 
Sorry I have'nt replied back guys, is that Hurricane Wilma knocked the power in my house (I'm still without), and I'm at another house right now.

So, the Samsung is the better choice? I wan't something good for gaming.

What's your budget? I'm personally doing research on LCDs for myself, and I'm looking at the Samsung 940B for the DVI, but if you don't have DVI, the 915N is the same panel without the DVI. :)

Using the native resolution will give you the best image quality. Running games are lower resolutions will be blurry and scewed due to monitor scaling. This means that if you use say, 1024x768 (4:3 ratio), the image will be magnified then stretched vertically to fit the 1280x1024 (5:4 ratio) screen.

Now as for your choices in monitors, I vouch for the Samsung and the BenQ. Samsung is just good all around, and BenQ's quality has greatly improved over the years.

i will sell you my Samsung 172X if you are interested. It has DVI/Analogue, true 12ms response time and is damn sexy. I have never seen ghosting, not once on any game. No dead pixels, nothing but goodness. I have had the itch to go bigger lately, so if you want to make a deal, PM me...

I just bought one of the Benqs.. I had to return the first one cause it had ONE red pixel.
I would vouch for it, its REALLY sweet. Actually, I am thinking on getting a second one for a dual setup.

So it seems the Samsung might be the better choice, I'm still not ready to buy as I have no power at my house, but I might go with it once I get my power restored. I'm still open to any suggestions or opinions.
 
I narrowed it down to the Samsung or the BenQ, what stands out on the BenQ is the 8ms response time, but I don' t know if that's a true response time or not.
 
The 740N is not much different from the 730B that we all know and love (except for no DVI out). Samsung tends to use different model numbers on the same LCD and sell one at small oem resellers, and the other at large chained retaillers like Best Buy. For example, the original 710N and the 712N; only individual resellers carried the first, and only big electronic stores carried the latter.
 
^So comparing the 710 and 740 which would be the better choice?
