Hi, Ive been looking at several lcd montiros and ive gotten it down to a few that I am having a hard time choosing between:

Samsung SyncMaster 172x

Samsung 710N

Sharp LL-172G-B

Sony StylePro SDM-S73

ViewSonic VP171B-2



what im looking to find out is which of these woudl be the best all around monitor since ill be using it for gaming, watching movies, and viewing alot of text. the 172x is the most expensive out of all of those, so as you can see my budget is from 250-350, of course i dont want to just throw money away unless one has a solid improvement over the others. if anyone has a suggestion for one not on my list, feel free to list it. thanks.
 
If you're wanting to use the DVI connection you need to throw out the 710N, its only analog and the Sony needs to be changed to the 74 model that has the DVI. I've seen the sonys hooked up side by side VGA and DVI and there is a noticable difference in the quality. Just a thought
 
ok thanks, i changed the sony to the 74 model for dvi input.

you say you saw the sony monitor, how do you think it fared?
 
my instant choice would be the viewsonic. 8ms (probably grey-grey), DVI w/cable, and a nice stand. Plus it comes with viewsonic quality, which, unlike some of their CRT is a good thing :p
 
We have dual sony's on 5200's in our computer labs here at school. So I've seen plenty of them on both the VGA and DVI input. The text is really crisp and the colors are good too. The response time is pretty good, scrolling this forum isn't bad as the text doesn't screak much at all. I'm actually gonna test one of them on my comp tonight by draggin it down there and playin some hl2 on it for a while to see how it games. Maybe watch some dvd on it too. I'll let you know how the rest goes, they do very well in a dual setup, bezel is pretty slim.

thanks for the testing Imitation, that will help alot, the sony monitor would be the cheapest of these three.


if anyone has experience with the other two monitors, id appreciate the feedback
 
hey no prob man, I'm in about the same spot really and have narrowed my choices down to those 3 plus the 19" L90D+ that everyone is raving about. I just have to wait for the tax return first.
 
Go for the VP171B. I love mine after over 2 years of ownership. I am getting a 201 soon to complement it soon.
 
So here's what i know after playin around with this sony for a while. I already knew that the text and color was pretty solid. I couldn't adjust the color for it or brightness cause they don't like us messing with it but it was still pretty good. A little washed out for my tastes at this point but I could probly adjust it some to make the colors look better I expect. The contrast ratio is more than enough, The blacks looked very black in pictures as well as games and the episode of 24 that I watched. I played some CS:S online for a while to test the gaming. Gaming was pretty good really, I expected it to be worse which makes me even more excited to get an LCD to replace my old CRT. It responded well during the game and after a few minutes I couldn't even tell that i was playing on a different monitor than usual. I then watch about 15 mins of episode 6 of this season's 24, which I have a copy of in xvid. I watched it full screen and windowed. There is more noticable pixel lag when the camera moves quickly than during the gaming but it wasn't too bad, probly me not being used to it more than anything else. Overall I was very impressed, not a bad monitor at all for less than 300 bucks!

So here's what i'd give it out of 5 with 5 being best:
Text: 5
Color reproduction: (without adjustment) 4
Gaming: 4.5
Movies/video: 4

So there you have it, also I'd just like to state that this is just my opinion of this monitor and if someone disagrees thats fine. I'm no expert, I just go by what I like :) If the viewsonic is much better in video and or gaming because of the better response time I'd recommend buying it for about 40 more bucks.

now knowing what the sony monitor does, darkninja67, can you explain if the viewsonic does better, worse, or the same in any of the areas Imitation spoke of?

now its coming down to either the sony or the viewsonic. the sony sounds great, but im a bit worried about xvid playback, since i watch alot of xvid videos on my pc. if the viewsonic can do no better then i would jsut save the money with the sony, but ill wait to hear what darkninja67 has to say.

again, i appreciate all the help

I have not used the Sony in my system. I have had such a good run with Viewsonic that I will continue to recommend this model. I wish I could find the old thread but it was deleted in the database overhaul awhile back. Anyway, the 171 is superb IMO. Very adjustable, no ghosting in games that I play (Far Cry, Raven Shield, Call of Duty, HL2, Doom 3, etc.) good DVD playback, very bright for where I have it set (roughly at 33% brightness). I have the older version of this monitor BTW. It is a 16ms panel. I believe it uses an AU Optronics panel. Hope this helps.
 
haven't used the other two, so I can't vouch for a compare. but right now i use a samsung syncmaster 172x. it's actually more expensive than the sony, but it sports a 12ms response time, as opposed to 16ms. i think the samsung has a better warranty too, 6 month zero dead pixel guarantee, and 3 years in total. i'm happy with what i have, and i'm playing high framerate games every day. dvd's look nice too, but that's not what i really use it for.
 
well when i look at pricing i notice that the viewsonic monitor is $30 more then the sony, but the samsung 172x is only $10 more then the viewsonic. decisions, decisions lol.


i just want one that is going to last and can handle multimedia jobs well enough wihtout annoying ghosting or pixalating. it sounds like all of the three do that, wiht the exception of some pixalating on the sony.

one other thing i ntoiced is that the viewsonic and samsun models both use a 6bit panel and not 8bit. the reviews ive seen for the viewsonic say that results in some bad color reproduction. does anyone know if the Sony monitor uses a 6bit or 8bit panel? my goal was to get a 16ms, 8bit panel, i didnt realize all my choices were 6bit lol. but maybe i can live with it, but id liek to hear from someone that tried the viewsonic 8ms mode specifically, just to know if its any differnt form the older model
 
I would assume that the sony uses the 6 bit panel as well. But I can't say for sure.
 
ok one other thing. just for arguments sake lets throw in the Hyundai L90D+ 19'' lcd. now this montior is in the same price range as the 172x. the only problem is the reviews from people that bought it are so varied, how can some say its fantaistc fro gaming, movies and text, then other say its not that great.

i read the review of it on tom's hardware and i got the impression it wasnt a good monitor at all, and yet ppl say otherwise. does anyone here own one that can vouch one way or another? if its good enough, im definitely doing the 19'' lcd. when i say good enough, i mean as good or better then the 17'' models ive talked about here.

I thought tomshardware praised the L90D+ and said it was very good for a TN panel :confused:
 
I have the 172x, I bought it about six months ago. The thing that is really nice about it is the thin bezel as well as the fact that its really compact so it fits in small areas, aka my desk in my dorm room. 12 ms response time is nice, my only complaint is that the colors are slight washed out, however I haven't really tried tweaking all that much, so its probably fixable, however it doesn't bother me that much. The colors on the original Samsung 213T were much nicer out of the box, however that monitor was too large for taking to school.
