16TB SSDs, anyone?

I want a M.2 version. I want to be able to store all my movies in my tablet, lol.
 
That'd go fantastically well into a ZFS all-SSD array. (yeah yeah, they'd do well in any storage use case)

Granted, when it comes to announced tech.... if I can't buy it, it doesn't exist. Call me when they pop up on Newegg or Amazon.
 
A few years and that would be mainstream. I've already swapped out all my 3.5" drives for 2.5" drives in all my builds. Mostly 7200rpm except for may one drive still running at 5200rpm. But it would definitely be nice to replace all of them with a single 16TB SSD DRIVE!!
 
I dont know about anyone else, but for that much storage, i'd rather do a RAID array of spinners, unless you can afford RAID ssds. thats just too much storage to not have backed up. I also dont see why a HTPC would need one? get a 40gb ssd for OS and a spinner for movies. its not like a hard drive is a bottleneck for playing a movie.

I retired my 500GB green and put in a 128GB SSD in my HTPC last week.

all of my media is stored on my file server so don't need much for the HTPC.
 
Its normal height 15mm 2.5 drive.

It is not laptop sized at 7mm or 9mm, so only a 4x5.25 carrier would fit them.

I'd take a 7mm 7TB drive, don't really need 16TB in my laptop. actually don't even need 7TB. lol
 
The 16TB is final nail in the coffin of mechanical drives. One can now wonder if HDD's with capacity bigger than 10TB will appear.

Yup, I don't think we'll see HDDs reach that capacity, they'll be replaced by SSDs by that time.
 
Right now, I've got 2x4U cases with 24 bays. Replace both of those cases with these, and load them up. 90 bays would be 1.44PB per chassis, and probably use the same amount of electricity as my existing spinners. I could use one of my MicroCloud blades as a controller, and replace the AOC with an Infiniband card. I like the specs that dreams up.

3.2GB/s
~2.5M IOPS
>1PB usable redundant storage
<100us latency including the IB switch

Of course, you're looking at about $2M per chassis fully loaded. Do I REALLY want to have $4,000,000 warming my feet under my desk? Hell, I haven't maxed out on speed or capacity on my old-fashioned spinners!

They have an 8 bay 2.5" and all you have to do is put it an a 5.25 external enclosure. ;) You'll just have to modify the rear.
 
Didn't Sandisk announce that they will release a 16TB SSD in 2016 a few month ago?

Thanks for the idea but I prefer it be a standalone unit with its own Mobo.:)
 
This would be the next logical upgrade for my 20 drive SFF nas. Now where did I put that spare couple hundred grand?

I use my HTPC as a NAS pretty much. So my HTPC is on 24/7, so I want lower power consumption. It probably doesn't change the power bill much but I'm anal about it for some reason. I also hate the HDD spin-up time when I first start browsing for movies on XBMC.
 
With two of those I may soon finally after all these years have a media player that can hold all my music.
