ok, im getting all new stuff. i like the idea of the 16mb cache hard drives, but they are all from maxtor unless i want to spend 200 or more per drive, and i've had nothing but failed drives from that company time after time. so from your guys experience is 16mb cache that much better?

16mb cache really that much better?

WD2500KS is a 16MB drive for ~$110, and it's a pretty good unit.
16MB buffer is not an absolute requirement, but it's nice to have. All other things being equal, a drive iwth a 16MB buffer will be faster than one with an 8MB buffer. However, very rarely are all things equal
Clicky shows a comparison of two 8MB drives (The unique 10K Raptor and the Hitachi T7K250) alongside two 16MB drives, the WD2500KS and Maxtor DiamondMax10. All of these drives are less than $200, and three of them can be had for less than $120 shipped on ZZF.
As for the performance, note that the T7K250 bests the DM10 in 4 of SR's 5 desktop tests, despite having the handicap of a smaller buffer - the Hitachi drive leverages better seek performance to close the gap created by the deficit in buffer size. Also note that the Raptor schools everyone, despite it being limited to an 8MB buffer.
