16MB Cache Maxtor Hard Drive Models Confusing, Need Help!

Im looking to buy the new 16mb cache drive from Maxtor simply because of the 16mb cache, ok 3 year warranty, and NCQ.

As im researching online, they only come in 250 and 300gb flavors, so I decided to go with the 300. I noticed there are 2 models wit the same exact specs

The 6L300S0 and the 6B300S0, what the hell is the difference, there's a $20 price difference on Newegg

Can somebody explaint the difference?
 
Not sure about the difference, but the $200 one has lots of reviews opposed to other that has none. And google brought back much better results for the $200 model. I'm sure they are very similar but it seems like the $200 model is the "main" one. Cheaper one could be 100% fine, just guessing
 
I went on the Maxtor website and they have the same EXACT specs except the cheaper "SL300S0" model is "RoHS Compliant"

"RoHS Compliant supports the EU directive for Restriction Of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)."

What the hell does that mean? other then the obvious?
 
According to Maxtor's datasheet, RoHS compliance is indeed the only difference between the SKUs you listed. This whole enivronmentally friendly kick by Maxtor is new - the green leaf is everywhere on their website now, so that explains the lack of reviews on the 6L300S0, which happens to be the cheaper drive anyway. I'd get it. If nothing else, it's got less toxic stuff inside, and oh yeh, it's cheaper for a drive that is, according to Maxtor, mechanically and logically the same.
 
Do you think the green leaf versions offer a lack in performance? I was thinking maby the drives are cheaper because they arent mainstream yet. I don't know, just my 2 cents.

Im still going to do a little research before I buy 1 or the other. If you have any more information, please post your thoughts. Is there a different warranty period between the two SKUs?
 
If they are still the same line, the cache strategies and all that jazz that determine performance won't change; just because the platters are more bio-friendly or whatever should not affect performance
 
the SL300S0 version (rohs compliant) is now priced at $160 compared to the $200 SB300S0 model

anybody know why? Need to order one of these soon
 
still havent bought 1 yet. still deciding, nobody knows why the SL is cheaper by the SB?
 
My guess as to why its cheaper...

There aren't as many of the "B" series drives around anymore. They are no longer made. Only the lead-free enviro friendly "L" series. So the "B" series are probably more expensive because there are less of them around.

Just a guess though.

We still get a few B series drives in for testing now and then, but almost all of the new drives we get are the L series. From the testing that I've done and seen, they are practically identical in perfermance. Varies between drives just as all of the B series did...
